He knocked in six runs and scored seven to help the Force to four wins in the week. He helped the team out on defense, making exciting diving catches in the outfield.
Pitcher of the Week: Tyler Van Stone – San Diego Force/Hawaii Pacific
Van Stone carried a no-hitter through seven innings, striking out 10, to earn a win over the Cal Jays. The recent graduate of HPU only gave up four hits and did not walk a batter. In the Force’s game against the OC Legends, the pitcher stepped up to the plate to pinch hit and hit a home run in his first at-bat of the summer.
Team Recaps
Palm Springs Power – Alisha Alexander
The Power made franchise history with their 18th-straight win on June 19. They have continued to build that streak that now sits at 21 games. In the last week, the Power went 5-0 including a three-game sweep of the Bucs. They recorded their fifth shutout of the season with a 15-0 win on Sunday. Austin Bull (Grand Canyon) led the Power with eight hits and eight RBI, while Jayden Kiernan (Utah) totaled seven hits and three RBI.
Cal Jays – Cassidy Thornburg
The California Jays (8-4) had a successful week on the road. They started the week by heading north to Cal Poly Pomona where they picked up two wins against the Inland Valley Buccaneers (9-1, 10-5). They then headed south at the end of the week to San Diego where they won their three game series against the San Diego Force, 2-1 (6-5, 1-11, 14-3). Christian Carlos (Holy Names) put up some good numbers over the five games, hitting two doubles, hammering a home run and adding five RBI to his stat sheet. Ricky Nunez (Cal State Monterey Bay) hit a double in each of the three games against the Force and Fabian Muniz had a solid pitching performance against the Bucs. Muniz tossed six innings, only gave up one run, and had eight strikeouts to keep his ERA at 0.83 on the season. With four wins over five games, the Cal Jays have moved up to second in league standings, just behind the Palm Springs Power.
San Diego Force – Cassidy Thornburg
The San Diego Force (7-8 conf., 10-9 non-conf.) had a tough week of competition in the SCCBL, though they got the bats moving, which is a small victory in of itself. They started the week with a loss on the road to the Power (10-4), picked up a non-conference win on Thursday night in Anaheim against the OC Legends (15-3), dropped a three-game series to the Cal Jays, 2-1 (6-5, 11-1, 14-3), but then picked up two wins against the San Diego Hustle to cap off the week (5-4, 17-2). Though the Force dropped beneath the Cal Jays in league standings, they had several notable performances over the week. Filling in as centerfielder and lead-off hitter, Ryan Williams had some incredible catches in the outfield, showing off speed and skill, while getting the party started at the plate for the San Diego Force. Over the week, Williams scored seven runs, 11 hits, five doubles, one triple, and six RBI, to put him at a .419 batting average. Cole Mueller also put on quite the show in the batter’s box with a total of five runs, eight hits, three doubles, a triple, a home run and six RBI. Mueller was among four Force players who hit a home run over the past weekend. Alex Blaszyk, Tyler Van Stone, and Will Stroud also hammered one out. Van Stone had another good start on the mound for the Force in the first game Saturday. Stone pitched a no-no through seven innings, striking out 10 to get the W. To complete the battery, Byron Smith as usual let nothing behind him, and had a remarkable play at the plate in the second game against the Cal Jays that kept a run off the board.
SoCal Stros – Alisha Alexander
It was a light week for the Stros, but proved to be a strong one. The Stros went 2-1 on the week, with two wins over the Pirates in a three-game set. Ryan Williams (Mt. SAC) (not to be confused with the Ryan Williams on the Force) had three hits in the 8-5 victory for the Stros. Cole Cooper was the hero of the game, coming up with a walk-off three-run homer to give the Stros the win.
Inland Valley Pirates – Jordan Quinn
In week three of SCCBL action the Inland Valley Pirates took away one win and one loss. In the 4-3 win versus the SB Saints, Demetri Colacchio, who had two hits and two RBI, led the offense. On the mound, Brian Marquez (UCCS) threw three scoreless innings with three strikeouts. In their 8-5 loss to the SoCal Stros, the Pirates offense was highlighted by Eric Rohrer (Claremont HS) who had a double and two RBI, and Dante Palacio (Mt. SAC) who had a double and RBI.
Inland Valley Bucs – Jordan Quinn
The Inland Valley Bucs had a rough week, being on the losing end of five SCCBL contests. The Bucs had a loss to the SoCal Stros (4-1), two losses to the California Jays (9-1 and 10-5) and two losses to the Palm Springs Power (11-7 and 7-5). There were bright spots for the Bucs. On offense, Rion Santamaria (CSU Pueblo) finished his week with five hits (three doubles) and three RBI, and Cam White (Chaffey) closed out week three with six hits (two doubles), two RBI and four runs scored. On the mound, the Bucs got strong pitching from Max Sterner (Occidental), who threw seven innings with eight strikeouts and only one earned run.
