Date: Jul 25, 2019
Steve Boscia (Power/ Hofstra) won the pitching duel Friday for the Power, pitching 7 2/3 scoreless to get the W. Jake Dahle (Power/ Utah) started on the mound Saturday, pitching through six with no earned runs against and eight strikeouts to his name. Darin May (Power/ Cal Poly Pomona) closed out on the mound on both Friday and Saturday, holding off any runs from scoring in those final innings to keep the Power undefeated against the Force this season (7-0).
Game One: Power beat Force 8-5
An Austin Bull (Power/ Grand Canyon) sacrifice fly in the top of the second scored Logan Jones to put the first run on the board for the Power and give them a lead they never relinquished. Matt Green (Power/ St. Mary’s) had the biggest hit of the day in the top of the seventh with a bases-clearing double that put the Power up 7-0. It wasn’t until the eighth inning that the Force’s bats came alive. The Force put up three in the eighth, all starting with a DJ Lewis (Force/ U of Cumberlands) double that scored two, and quickly followed by a Ryan Williams (Force/ Cal Baptist) sacrifice fly that scored Baker Springstun (Force/ Undecided). The Force rallied through the ninth, putting up two against Brandon Rushing (Power/ Hutchinson CC), the Power’s intended closer, forcing the Power to bring out May. May got the job done, getting the final two outs of the game.
Game Two: Power beat Force 8-1 to win the Championship
Alongside the temperatures in Palm Springs, the pressure was high going into game two. The Force found themselves in a do-or-die situation. In order to stay alive, they needed to do something no team in the league had accomplished all season, beat the Power. The first inning saw no offense with both teams going three up, three down. From there, much like game one, the Power got an early lead they never relinquished. The Power scored four runs, three earned against the San Diego Force’s starting pitcher Cameron Dean (Force/ Rockhurst). Hayden Schilling (Power/ U of New Mexico) doubled and Hobbs Nyberg (Power/ BYU) hit a two-RBI single to contribute to their offense. Eric Telarroja (Force/ Bethesda) entered the game in the middle innings and pitched through three, having no earned runs against and five strikeouts to his name. The solo run for the Force came in the top of the sixth when a single by shortstop Will Stroud (Force/ Azusa Pacific) scored Ryan Williams. The Power continued to push runs across through the seventh and Darin May again closed out on the day for the Power to bring them to their final score of 8-1 over the Force.
