The 2019 SCCBL season is underway for all six teams, and after the first week the Palm Springs Power sit atop the standings without a loss. With a 2-0 record in conference play, 7-0 overall, they are followed closely by the San Diego Force who are 3-1 in SCCBL play.
Player of the Week – Landen Barns (Power/East Texas Baptist)
Landen Barns earned the first SCCBL Player of the Week honors after dominating opposing pitching through the first eight games of the season. The infielder from East Texas Baptist racked up 15 hits (15-30) for a .500 batting average. He have knocked in 10 runs as well as scored three runs, and has collected four doubles and a triple. He also swiped two bags.
Pitcher of the Week – Joshua Torres (Jays)
Torres has a strong week for the Jays, going 1-0 in two appearances. The right-hander did not allow a run, hit or walk in seven innings pitched. He struck out nine batters and holds a perfect 0.00 ERA.
Palm Springs Power – Alisha Alexander
The Palm Springs Power have put up impressive numbers in the first week of the 2019 campaign and hold an 8-0 record, 3-0 in SCCBL play. The top team in the league standings has produced four shutouts already, including two to open the season and two in league play. Their biggest win of the season so far came against the Halos in the second game of the season which resulted in a 15-0 win. Barns leads the league in batting average (.500) and hits (15) and has also knocked in 10 runs for the Power. They continue their slate of SCCBL games when they hit the road on Monday to take on the IV Pirates.
San Diego Force – Cassidy Thornburg
The San Diego Force got the ball rolling with their first full week of summer ball, playing six games evenly split between three on the road and three at home. Their week started with a SCCBL double header on Sunday which they split with the SoCal Stros, winning the first game 5-2 and losing the second 6-3. After losing to the Invaders in their season opener, the Force came back and beat them on Tuesday 8-2. Carrying the momentum, the Force hosted the Orange County Legends at Madison High School on Wednesday and beat them 7-2. Then Thursday, the Force went on the road to the Pirates. They lost the first game 6-0, but came back and won the second 6-3. With week one in the books, the Force look ahead to week two, consisting of mostly road games, ready to take on the Inland Valley Bucs, West Coast Bulldogs, and Palm Springs Power.
Cal Jays – Cassidy Thornburg
The Jays had their first full week of summer ball with just one game on June 5 against the Inland Valley Pirates. They hosted the Pirates at the Soboba Sports Complex and came away with a 6-2 victory. Their two games set for Saturday, also at the Soboba Sports Complex, were postponed due to field conditions, but will be rescheduled for a future date. The California Jays look ahead to a more eventful week against the SoCal Stros, Inland Valley Pirates, and Inland Valley Bucs.
Inland Valley Pirates - Jordan Quinn
The Inland Valley Pirates started the week with a 5-1 win against the San Diego Waves in a non-conference game that was highlighted by the pitching staff that only allowed two hits. They then lost back-to-back conference games on Wednesday and Thursday; first to the Palm Springs Power 8-0, and then to the San Diego Force 6-3. Despite these losses, the Pirates finished their week strong with a 9-1 victory in a non-conference game against Southern Nevada.
SoCal Stros - Alisha Alexander
The Stros opened their season with a split with the Cal Jays. At 2-6 so far on the season, the Stros have recorded wins against the Jays and San Diego Force, both coming in double header splits. Evan Banks leads the Stros with eight hits and Ryan Williams is currently batting .300.
Inland Valley Bucs - Jordan Quinn
Week one of the SCCBL season was a rough one for the Inland Valley Bucs who lost three non-conference games to start the year. The week began with a 19-3 loss to the San Diego Waves on Tuesday. They then dropped Wednesday's game against the Nighthawks by a score of 12-2 and ended d their week with a 13-1 loss to the Riptide. Coming into this week's conference schedule, the Bucs will be looking to turn things around.
