All-SCCBL Selections- A Hitter from Mississippi and a Pitc...
Date: Jul 25, 2019
The league released the 2018 All-SCCBL Teams on Saturday, with 33 players making up two teams. Three teams tied with the most players named to the teams, with the Power, Force, and Bucs all having seven players earn the honor. The Bulldogs had six players garner All-SCCBL honors, while the Pirates and Bombers each had three. Kory Brown of the Inland Valley Bucs was voted the 2018 SCCBL Player of the Year, and Jonathan Buckley of the Palm Springs Power was voted the 2018 SCCBL Pitcher of the Year. Both were also First Team selections.
Kory Brown (Bucs) was named SCCBL Player of the Year after producing a slash line of .420/.593/.484, one of the strongest in the league. Brown led the SCCBL in hits with 34 in league play, racking up eight doubles, two home runs, and a league-best 19 RBI. He appeared in all 20 league games, scoring nine runs for the Bucs and swiped two bags.
Manager Kevin Bowler explained the impact Brown had on his team. “We called him ‘Dad’ for a reason; not just because he was the oldest, but because he was a highly respected leader on the team. We were lucky to have such a high-quality individual on the team as well as a high-quality baseball player.”
Jonathan Buckley (Power/St. Mary’s) was named SCCBL Pitcher of the Year after leading the Power with a 3-0 record in the regular season. In SCCBL play, Buckley led the league with a 0.77 ERA through five starts with one complete game. In 35 innings pitched, the rising senior out of St. Mary’s College struck out 36 batters while walking just five. He gave up only three earned runs on 24 hits.
Manager Casey Dill shared why Buckley was so valuable to the Power. “Buckley was a player who lead by example, he expected to win every time he took the mound. He is a fierce competitor who loves pitching in big moments. I trusted Buckley with the ball every time he took the mound, that he would give us a chance to win, and he did.”
