Stags Hockey is Heading Back to Nationals!
Date: Feb 27, 2019

Your Fairfield Stags are off to a great start this season, going undefeated in their first four games. Their first game was in NY against Fordham University where the team took back a 5-1 win. They entered their home-opener weekend 1-0 and left it with 3 more wins and 18 more goals under their belt.
Friday night, the team faced off against Quinnipiac University. Your Stags scored first, with goals by junior Michael Knightly and senior Jim Affenito to kick off the first period. Quinnipiac answered with one of their own midway through the second period, but the Stags held onto their lead until the clock was down to 54 seconds and Quinnipiac tied it up. Nerves were high heading into the fourth, but overtime wins are not something our Stags aren't used to. Freshman forward Michael Della Torre added the final goal in for the Stags, winning the game with minutes to spare in OT.
Saturday, the Stags were ready to hit the ice hard again. While the Stags were busy racking up points, junior goalie Nic Buongiorno only allowed one goal for Richard Stockton. Fairfield won the game 11-1, scoring 4 goals in the first period and seven in the third. Goal scorers include junior Michael Jordan (2), freshman Tom Mazzarro, junior Dan Giberna, freshman Russ Mazzarro, junior Kyle Marano, sophomore Owen Gleeson (2), junior Brendan Joyce, freshman Michael Della Torre, and sophomore Gus Sample. Also playing well for the Stags was senior captain Pat Lawler, and sophomore Brendan McDonough.
Finally, Sunday night, Fairfield faced off against Southern CT State. Their third in a row, this game was a true test of skill and endurance, one in which the Stags aced. The first goal was scored by senior defenseman Dan Giberna midway through the first. It was quickly answered by SCSU, but the Stags were up for the fight. Junior Kyle Marano and sophomore Michael Jordan both scored goals in the third, yet both again were quickly answered by Southern. Heading into overtime for the second time that weekend, the Stags were eager and ready to give it their all. Another goal by junior Kyle Marano not only sealed them the night's win, but the weekend's sweep.
Overall, the Stags have gone 4-0 this season and have scored a total of 23 goals. Junior forward Kyle Marano leads the team in points, with seniors Dan Giberna, Pat Lawler, and Scott Kohlhepp, and sophomore Owen Gleeson following close behind. Their next games are this coming Friday for a rematch at Southern and the following Friday at Quinnipiac. Their next home game is vs. rival Farmingdale on Sunday, October 29th at 3:15pm.
