Former Big 10 Star Signs with Storm

On Tuesday night the Rainmen held their last regular season home game, losing a tough game to the London Lightning 103-87 in front of a crowd of 2521 at the Halifax Metro Centre.
In the first quarter the Rainmen started strong, and Joey Haywood's 3 point play-giving him 11 points in the quarter- tied the game at 25, before the Lightning took a 27-25 lead into the second quarter. At half the Rainmen trailed 48-42 led by guards Joey Haywood with 13 and Melvin Goins with 12, while the Lightning were led by forward Elvin Mims with 8 points and 9 rebounds.
In the third quarter Melvin Goins 3 pointer cut the London lead to 50-46 with 10:30 to play, but the Lightning went on a 30-20 run to end the quarter with a 80-66 lead heading into the fourth. In the fourth quarter, back-to-back baskets by forward Hillary Haley made it 85-77 with 8 minutes to play, but the Lightning finished the game on an 18-10 run to seal the 103-87 victory.
The Rainmen were led by forward Akeem Wright who had 20 points and 15 rebounds for his first double-double with the Rainmen. Starting guards Melvin Goins and Joey Haywood added 19 points each, and forward Hillary Haley had 11 off the bench.
The Lightning were led by forward Elvin Mims who had a dominating double-double with 23 points, 14 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 blocks. Former Rainmen Rodney Buford scored 19 off the bench, Jermaine Blackburn had 12 points and Tim Ellis had a double-double with 10 points & 11 rebounds.
The Rainmen were outrebounded 56-45 in the game, and shot under 41% from the field, 32% from 3 and 59% on free-throws, compared to the Lightning who shot over 43% from the field, 45% from 3 and 79% from the free-throw line.
The Rainmen play their final regular season game Saturday March 16th against the Summerside Storm- in a game that may still decide the Rainmen playoff fate.
