2025 NECBL Rookie Of The Year: Matt Bolton
Date: Aug 15, 2025
Keene, NH – August 10, 2025 – The Keene SwampBats proudly congratulate former pitcher Alex Wood on his outstanding Major League Baseball career following his retirement announcement Friday afternoon.
Wood, affectionately known to fans and teammates as “A-Wood” or “Woodman”, first took the mound for Keene during the 2010 NECBL season, showcasing the talent and competitive drive that would carry him to the game’s highest level. That summer, Wood started eight games, posting a 2–3 record with a 3.95 ERA over 38.2 innings, striking out 36 batters while walking just 10.
In 2012, the Atlanta Braves selected Wood in the second round (85th overall) of the MLB Draft. Over the next 12 Major League seasons, Wood pitched for five teams — the Atlanta Braves, Los Angeles Dodgers, Cincinnati Reds, San Francisco Giants, and Oakland Athletics — compiling a 77–68 career record, 3.78 ERA, and 13.4 WAR.
A 2017 MLB All-Star, Wood reached the pinnacle of the sport in 2020 when he helped the Los Angeles Dodgers capture the World Series championship. Known for his deceptive delivery, fierce competitiveness, and consistency on the mound, Wood became a respected veteran presence in every clubhouse he joined.
Wood’s 2025 season was cut short in May due to left rotator cuff tendinitis, leading to his retirement announcement this month.
"Alex was one of the most talented pitchers ever to wear a SwampBats uniform," said Kevin Watterson. "We’re incredibly proud of everything he accomplished — from his summer in Keene to winning a World Series. He will always be part of the SwampBats family."
The Keene SwampBats extend their heartfelt congratulations to Alex Wood on his exceptional career and wish him the very best in his next chapter.
