NEWPORT, RI – The Newport Gulls and Newport This Week joined forces on Friday, July 25th to host Jake Cathers Night at Cardines Field—an unforgettable evening dedicated to supporting a beloved member of the local community in his fight against Stage 4 pancreatic cancer.
Jake Cathers, a Middletown resident, husband, father of three, and longtime community advocate, has touched countless lives across Aquidneck Island. From coaching local sports and supporting nonprofits to writing heartfelt stories and managing successful small businesses, Jake has always shown up for his community. On this night, that same community showed up for him.
Cardines Field was packed with fans, friends, and supporters, coming together not just for a baseball game, but for a cause that resonated deeply. Thanks to the generosity of attendees, local donors, and ongoing fundraising efforts—including wristband sales and a GoFundMe—the night was a resounding success.
During a powerful pregame ceremony, the Gulls presented Jake and his family with a check for an incredible $59,693, raised through community donations and event proceeds. The presentation served as a touching reminder of what the community can achieve when it comes together.
From every ticket sold to every wristband worn, the evening was filled with love, hope, and unity. The Newport Gulls and Newport This Week are beyond grateful for the overwhelming support shown for Jake and his family and will continue to stand by them in this journey.
