7/15 Recap: Clippers Get to Within One Point of Second Place

South Shore 10, Shelter Island 6

 

The South Shore Clippers defeated the Shelter Island Bucks by a score of 10-6 on Tuesday and got to within a point of the Southampton Breakers for the second playoff spot in the HCBL.

 

The Clippers took control of the game following a seven-run bottom of the first inning. Ryan Hillery (St. Thomas Aquinas) had a pair of hits for South Shore in the leadoff spot with a pair of RBI and a stolen base. Larry Hotaling (Villanova) went 2-for-4 on the afternoon with an RBI and a stolen base.

 

Kevin Brown (Wesleyan) went four innings for the Clippers, only allowing one run on four hits as he improved his record on the season to 3-2.

 

On the Bucks side of the boxscore, John Gannon (St. Lawrence) was 3-for-4 with an RBI while Matt Holmes (Husson) hit his third home run of the season.

 

South Shore plays Southampton tomorrow at 5 PM at William Floyd High School, with the winner controlling the number two seed in the HCBL playoff picture. Shelter Island travels to the Bridgehampton School tomorrow to play the Westhampton Aviators.


 

Sag Harbor 12, Westhampton 2 (6 Innings)

 

The Sag Harbor Whalers, at 12-12-4 with 28 points, took control of the final playoff spot in the HCBL, beating the Westhampton Aviators by a score of 12-2 in six innings. With the victory, the Whalers now lead the Shelter Island Bucks at 13-16 with 26 points for the last playoff spot.

 

Matteo Cubello (St. Anselm) highlighted the Whalers' offense, going 2-for-3 with three RBI on the day. Chris Morabito (Bucknell), despite not getting a hit, scored four runs for the Whalers and stole three bases. Tyler Sirchia (Dartmouth) had a pair of hits and RBI in the win for Sag Harbor.

 

Derrick Dellea (La Salle) pitched four innings for the Whalers and earned his first victory of the 2025 season.


 

North Fork 12, Southampton 2 (6 Innings)

 

The first-place North Fork Ospreys excited the Cochran Park home crowd under the lights with a 12-2 six-inning win over Southampton on Tuesday night.

 

Thomas Matuszewski (Jefferson) went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI and now leads the HCBL batting title with a .455 batting average. Rocco Cimino (Pace) led off for North Fork and had a pair of hits, scoring a run and driving in three RBI.

 

Nick Munoz (Riverside CC) pitched the first two innings as an opener for North Fork and got his first win of the season. Brian Espinal (Pace) pitched 3.1 scoreless innings of relief while Conner Foster (Rock Valley) pitched the last two-thirds of the top of the sixth.
