Game one of the J Ross Robertson Cup finals went on Thursday night and the Wentworth Gryphins and Stoney Creek Tigers put on a show at the Harry Howell Arena in Flamborough, Ontario. Like two of their regular season contests, the teams would need extra time to find the winner.

Wentworth sent the home crowd into a frenzy, taking a 2-0 lead in the first 10 minutes of play on goals by Alex Hutchings and Matt MacLeod. However, before the horn could go to end the first period, Josh Ranalli got the Tigers back within one.

In the second frame, Cordell James scored the only goal, evening the score at two. The score remained that way for the rest of regulation, sending the game to overtime.

It took 8:42 in the extra frame when Tyler Van Kleef scored the game-winning goal for the Gryphins. With the win, Wentworth is now one win away from capturing their first ever J. Ross Robertson Cup Championship and advance to the Allan Cup Challenge tournament in Dundas later this month.

Matt Camilleri made 45 saves on the night for the Gryphins victory, 18 of them coming in the OT period, while at the other end of the arena, Daniel Svedin stopped 34 of 37 shots in the loss.

Game two of the series will be played on Saturday April 6th at the Gateway Ice Centre in Stoney Creek. The action is scheduled to get underway at 7:30pm.
