Allan Cup Hockey looking at return to Brantford
Date: Jun 5, 2024
On Sunday, the Allan Cup Hockey League announced the dates for the 2024 J. Ross Robertson Cup finals. This year’s finals will see the defending Roberton Cup champions Stoney Creek Tigers take on the 2024 Allan Cup Hockey regular season champions, the Wentworth Gryphins in a best of three final.
The final series will kick off on Thursday April 4th at the Harry Howell Arena in Flamborough. Game two of the series will be played two nights later, on Saturday April 6th at the Gateway Ice Center in Stoney Creek. Should a third game be needed it will be played on Wednesday April 10th back in Flamborough. All games in the series will start at 7:30pm.
Wentworth finished the regular season with a 12-3-1 record, claiming the regular season title, while the Tigers finished with a 10-5-1 record in second place. In the round robin portion of the 2024 postseason, the Gryphins captured home ice advantage after going 4-2. Their fourth win came in the final game of the round robin, defeating Stoney Creek on home ice by a score of 7-4.
Not only will the winner of the best of three series take home the J. Ross Robertson Cup, but they will also join the host Real McCoys in the 2024 Allan Cup Challenge tournament being held in Dundas April 20th through the 27th.
During the regular season, Cordell James led Stoney Creek, and was second in the ACH, with 45 points, 21 goals, and sat third in the league with 24 assists. For Wentworth, it was Alex Hutchings who led the way and was battling James throughout the season. Hutchings finished in third in the league for points with 44, third in goals with 19 and second with 25 assists, just one behind Dundas’ Mackenzie Wood.
In net, it was a battle all season with Stoney Creek’s Daniel Svedin and Wentworth’s Matt Camilleri each having eight victories. However, Camilleri would end the regular season with a better goals against average at 4.87 and named the top goaltender for 2023-24.
The Gryphins came out on top in their regular season series, going 4-0-1, with each team picking up a victory in overtime on the road. Wentworth would outscore Stoney Creek 37-23. During the postseason round robin, Wentworth took the three games 2-1, outscoring the Tigers 15-11 head-to-head.
Going into the best of three series for the Robertson Cup, the numbers give the Wentworth Gryphins the sedge, but this series will be a dog fight right until the final buzzer.
