With the Robertson Cup Finals participants already decided, Thursday night’s contest between the Stoney Creek Tigers and Wentworth Gryphins served as a preview of the finals, and decided who would end the round robin on top of the standings.

It was the visitors that opened the scoring with the Tigers’ Mike Riley scoring on the power play at 7:05 of the opening period. However, Wentworth’s Matt MacLeod scored just under three minutes later to even the score at one.

The scoreboard remained the same until over halfway through the second period when Matt Beca gave the Gryphins the lead. That lead was short-lived though as Cordell James scored 18 seconds later for Stoney Creek, making it a two-two game. With 5:21 left in the middle frame, Wentworth was awarded a penalty shot which Beca converted for his second of the game.

In the third, the Gryphins jumped out to a big lead as Marc-Anthony Simonetta, Tory Maclean and Remy Grftopoulos all found the back for the net, giving the home side at 6-2 lead. Stoney Creek did battle back into it, getting markers from Michael Ruberto, while shorthanded, and James. But Kyle Lewis put the game away with an empty netter with 44 seconds remaining in game.

Matt Camilleri picked up the victory for Wentworth, stopping 31 of 35 shots on the night, while Stoney Creek’s Tymen Edelkoort took the loss, allowing six goals on 30 shots.

The Gryphins and Tigers will now prepare for the Robertson Cup Finals. The schedule for the best of three series, with the winner advancing to the Allan Cup Challenge tournament in Dundas April 20th to 27th, will be released in the coming days.
