The Wentworth Gryphins defeated the Dundas Real McCoys by a score of 10-4 on Thursday night at the Harry Howell Arena. With the Gryphins’ victory, they eliminated Dundas from advancing to the Robertson Cup and will face the Stoney Creek Tigers in the finals. All that is left to decide with the final two games of the round robin is home ice in the finals.

 

Wentworth took full control of the game right from the faceoff, but it wasn’t until 7:12 into the period that they were able to get on the board thanks to Remy Giftopoulos. Matt Beca followed that up just over two minutes later to give the home side a 2-0 lead. Matt MacLeod and Jesse Healy rounded the scoring in the first period for a 4-0 lead, with the latter coming while short-handed.

 

In the second period, the Gryphins continued to roll, outscoring Dundas 3-2 in the frame. Beca and Kyle Lewis notched goals a minute, 53 seconds apart for a commanding 6-0 lead. However, Igor Gongalsky got Dundas on the board just 27 seconds after Lewis’ goal. Mark Corbett then scored an unassisted goal 25 seconds later to regain the six-goal cushion for Wentworth in front of their fans. Phil Brewer did get one more back for the McCoys with 4:54 left in the period.

 

If the game wasn’t over already, Wentworth made sure of it in the first 12 minutes of the third period, getting goals from Giftopoulos, Marc Anthony Simonetta and Brett Flemming. The McCoys would get something going late with goals from Brad Bonello and Nathan Longpre, but it was too late for the visitors on this night.

 

Matt Camilleri picked up the win in the Gryphins’ net, stopping 33 of 37 shots while Mike Mole was peppered with 57 shots in the Dundas crease.

 

Dundas will conclude their schedule for the postseason tomorrow night when they host the Gryphins at the J. L. Grightmire Arena. The Real McCoys will be back on the ice in April as they will host the 2024 Allan Cup Challenge.
