Mike Ruberto and Cordell James had a four-point night each on Friday night against the Dundas Real McCoys on their way to an 8-6 win. In the loss on home ice, Shane Conacher helped make a late push, scoring twice and added three assists.
It would be Dundas that opened the scoring in the contest with Jarrett Konkle at 4:37 of the first. From there, the Tigers turned it on, first getting a power play marker from Paul Geiger at 13:07 and then taking the lead 14 seconds later when Ruberto scored on a tip-in. Stoney Creek would extend their lead to two with 3:30 remaining in the opening 20 minutes of play on Bo Webster’s tip-in goal.
The Tigers kept it going in the second, scoring 15 seconds into the middle stanza on Jordan Gignac’s second of the playoffs. From that point, the intensity picked up and the McCoys started to throw some weight around. Dundas appeared to have scored just over three minutes into the period, on the power play, but Daniel Svedin was able to somehow keep the puck out.
Dundas had a few more opportunities in the period, but Svedin made saves without even seeing the puck or the puck bouncing over the stick of a wide-open McCoy player. Stoney Creek would extend their lead to four with just 44 seconds left on the clock in the second when Geiger’s pass went off a skate and into the open side of the Dundas cage.
With the McCoys down by four goals entering the final period, they looked to make a comeback, but right out of the gates, Ruberto took the wind out of their sails, as he picked up his second of the contest at the 1:47. That didn’t sit well with Shane Conacher who scored just over seven minutes later. Ruberto and Conacher would also score the next goals for their respective teams to make it 7-3 for Stoney Creek.
Cordell James finished off the scoring for the visitors with 6:44 to go and a commanding five-goal lead. However, Dundas was not done. Slater Doggett, Trevor Atkinson and Chris Campoli all scored in the final two minutes to get with in a pair, but that was as close as they would get.
Svedin would finish the night with 36 saves for the win for the Tigers while Mike Mole stopped 38 of 46 shots in the loss.
Dundas and Stoney Creek will be back in action on Saturday March 16th with the scene shifting to the Gateway Ice Centre starting at 6:30pm.
