Gulls Split Doubleheader with Sharks
Date: Jul 8, 2025
North Adams, MA- The Bristol Blues traveled to North Adams to take on the SteepleCats in a doubleheader on Saturday. in Game 1, Randy Reyes (Central Connecticut State) started on the mound for North Adams, and Peter Ostensen (Fairfield) got the baseball for Bristol.
This game was a pitcher's duel! Let's flash forward to the bottom of the fourth inning. Cedric Rose (UMASS-Lowell) smacked a one-out single. He moves over the second on a ground out, bringing up Vince Bianchina (Northwestern) with two outs.
Bianchina lined a single into center field, giving the Cats a 1-0 lead. That held up until the seventh and final frame.
Gerry Peacock (Notre Dame) took over in the top of the seventh after Reyes finished six scoreless innings while striking out seven batters and only walking one.
Derek Tenney (Hartford) singled to lead off the inning, and Chaz Myers (Pacific) laid down a beautiful sacrifice bunt that moved the runner over the second. Jay Harry (Penn State) popped up to third base for the second out of the inning.
The Cats were one out a way from not only a game-one victory but their first win in six tries against the Bristol Blues. It would have to wait because Joe Rios (Central Connecticut State) smoked an RBI single to right field that landed just out of the reach of Trey Ciulla-Hall (Stonehill).
The Cats went quietly in their half of the seventh, and the game headed into extra innings. Peacock returned for the eighth and promptly walked Matt Smith (Bryant). Because a runner starts on second base to open extra innings, the Blues had two runners on with nobody out.
Carson Swank (Yale) flew out to center, but Griffin Arnone (Elon) singled, bringing home Jack Lynch (Manhattan), which gave Bristol the lead for the first time all game.
With two runners in scoring position and less than two outs, Peacock struck out Ben Huber (UCONN) for the second out of the inning. The right-hander was nearly out of the woods, but Tenney doubled into the right-center gap, bringing both Smith and Arnone home, giving the Blues a 4-1 lead.
The Cats would not go down without a fight. Carson Dunkel (Albany) started the inning on second base. Tommy DiTullio reached on an error by Chaz Myers. This put runners on the corners with nobody out.
Dixon Black (Monmouth) flew out to left, but it wasn't deep enough to bring a run home. Cedric Rose reached on an error that loaded the bases.
Brady Mutz (Monmouth) hit a fly ball to shallow left field, but that one was deep enough to score Dunkel. The game was 4-2.
The next batter, Bianchina, singled to center to score DiTullio. All of a sudden, the tying run was on second base. Alex Lane came out next and smacked a single through the hole between short and third. Manager Austin Straub sent Rose around third to try and score, but he was gunned down at the plate by Matt Smith for the final out. The Blues emerged victorious in the opener of the doubled header 4-3.
The two teams had a quick turnaround as Game 2 began 30 minutes after Game 1. Cohen Nies (Defiance) got the start for the SteepleCats, and Mason Ulsh (Quinnipiac) was Bristol's hurler.
This game appeared to be very similar to the opener. It was a real pitcher's duel as Ulsh and Nies went toe-to-toe. The contest was scoreless until the bottom of the sixth.
Vince Bianchina and Dixon Black reached base with back-to-back walks. Cedric Rose went down on strikes, but Brady Mutz lofted a single the opposite way into left field that dropped in for a base hit, giving the Cats a 1-0 lead.
The next batter Alex Lane blew the game wide open. He crushed a 1-0 fastball way over the center field wall for a 3-run blast giving the Cats a 4-0 lead. It came off the bat at 101 miles per hour and landed just 400 feet from home plate.
Cohen Nies finished off the Blues as the Cats split the doubleheader.
Later that night, the organization would realize that Nies threw a no-hitter. A single in the second inning was changed to an error.
The SteepleCats will take on the Danbury Westerners tonight at 5:00 p.m. Jack McMullen (Lafayette) will be on the mound for the Cats, and Sean Hogan (Williams) will get the ball for the Westerners.
