Gulls Split Doubleheader with Sharks
Date: Jul 8, 2025
North Adams, MA- Another day, another loss for the North Adams SteepleCats as they begin this 2022 NECBL campaign a disappointing 0-5. They lost a tough one against Martha's Vineyard on Saturday by a final score of 5-2.
Things looked good early as North Adams' starting pitcher, UPenn's Cole Zaffiro, struck out the side in the first. He was pounding the zone, hitting his spots, and doing a great job of keeping the Sharks off balance.
Martha's Vineyard scored the first run of the game in their half of the second, but in the home half of the inning, DH Alex Lane evened the score with a titanic opposite-field solo blast.
The Cats took the lead the following inning on an RBI double by 2B Kyle Hannon, knocking in Tyler Epstein. A solid start from Zaffiro, who went five innings, only allowing the one run and striking out seven, allowed North Adams to settle into a groove.
Ryan Birchard entered the game in the sixth, and a single, three walks, and a hit batsman later, Martha's Vineyard retook the lead 3-2.
The Sharks picked up a couple more runs in the eighth inning, and the SteepleCats were held scoreless from the third inning on.
However, this loss did not come without a few bright spots. Scott Jones had an excellent day at the dish out of the lead-off position as he went 2 for 3 with two singles and a stolen base. The outfielder may have just found his niche in the order.
Cedric Rose added another extra-base hit to his hot start to the summer as he sent a double out to the right-center gap in the ninth inning.
The Cats, still looking for their first win in the season, will face off in a double header against the Danbury Westerners. Game 1 starts at 4:00, and Game 2 will begin shortly after the completion of Game 1.
