#SchoonSquad uses big fifth inning in 13-3 road win

DANBURY — The Mystic Schooners baseball team used a six run top of the fifth inning to secure a 13-3 win against the Danbury Westerners Saturday night at Rogers Park. 

 

Senior Tucker Flint (University of North Carolina Greensboro) put the Schooners up early 1-0 with his first home run of the summer. The Westerners responded with two home runs in the home half of the inning off the bats of Harrison Feinberg and Hank Thomas to take a 2-1 lead. 

 

Mystic quickly followed with a two-run home run from junior Addison Kopack (University of Rhode Island)  to retake the lead at 3-2. Danbury tied the game in the bottom of the inning on an error from Mystic. 

 

With the game tied at 3-3 heading into the fifth, Mystic broke the game open with a six-run inning with the first two coming off a balk and a walk. Junior Cole Singsank (High Point University)  then followed with a two-run single through the five hole into left fielding, scoring Johnny Piacentino (Penn State University) and Flint. 

 

Junior Tristian McAlister (Mount St. Mary’s University)  sent a 1-1 pitch into right field scoring Anthony Steele (Penn State University) and Ray Sass (Brown University) to extend the lead to 9-3. 

 

The Schooners added four insurance runs across the sixth and seventh inning, cruising their way to the 13-3 victory. 

 

Mystic will look to get back to .500 with a 6:30 pm first pitch on Sunday evening. 

 

Game Notes: 

  • Schooners pitching totaled 13 strikeouts on the evening.

  • Mystic worked 12 walks on the night, with Leuthner and Pagliarini each having three.

  • Kopack extended his hitting streak to four-games Saturday with his third inning home run. He is now hitting .353 on the season with six hits, five RBIS, four runs and two home runs. 

  • McAlister has reached base safely in each of his last four games.

  • All nine of Mystic’s starters reached base for the first time this season. 

  • Pagliarini finished 1-for-3 with three walks and three runs, earning the 108 Drink Player of the Game.

  • Cole Singsank finished with two RBIs off of one single. 

  • LHP Bowen Baker (Fairfield) earned the win after throwing two scoreless innings in relief, allowing just one hit and striking out two. 

  • RHP Anthony Steele (Penn State) made his NECBL debut on the mound, going a scoreless inning with one strikeout. 

  • RHP Ben Gorski (Rutgers) and RHP Jimmy Chatfield (Yale University) struck out the side in each of their innings of work.

 

UP NEXT: Mystic will host Martha’s Vineyard  tomorrow, June 12, at 6:30 p.m. at Dodd Stadium. The game will be streamed on the NECBL Broadcast Network, with live stats and streaming information available on schoonersbaseball.com.
