Mystic falls to Newport 8-7 on the road

NEWPORT, RI - The Mystic Schooners baseball team suffered its first loss of the 2022 season Wednesday night, falling to Newport by a score of 8-7 at Cardines Field. 

 

Mystic jumped out first with a 2-run home run to right centerfield from junior Addison Kopack (University of Rhode Island). Newport then plated three runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 3-2 lead. 

 

After senior Jimmy Chatfield (Yale University) advanced to second on a passed ball, Kopack drove home the San Diego, California native with a double down the left field line to tie the contest at three a piece. 

 

The Gulls plated three runs across the bottom half of the fourth and fifth combined to retake the lead at the midway point of the game. 

 

With the Schooners trailing 6-3 in the top of the seventh, Charlie Pagliarini (Fairfield) got a hold of a 2-0 fastball to send it to straight away centerfield for a grand slam scoring Ray Sass (Brown University), Johnny Piacentino (Penn State University) and Kopack to take a 7-6 lead. 

 

Newport tied up the game in the bottom half of the inning on a fielder’s choice. 

 

In the bottom of the eighth with two outs, Parker Haskin launched a double to left, scoring Trent Farquhar for the game winning run. 

 

UP NEXT: Mystic will return home to host Sanford on Thursday, June 9 at 12:00 p.m. at Dodd Stadium. The game will be streamed on the NECBL Broadcast Network, with live stats and streaming information available on schoonersbaseball.com.
