Game 1:

North Adams, MA- In their first double header of the 2021 season, the North Adams SteepleCats took 1 of 2 against the 1st place Upper Valley Nighthawks, bringing their record to 3-4-2 on the year.  Each of the games, were low scoring affairs with high quality pitching throughout. Game one went to the Cats 3-1, and Upper Valley answered with a 3-0 win in game 2.

In game one the Cats gave the ball to left hander Wilfrido Valenzuela and he recorded his first win of the year going 5 innings giving up 1 run.  His counter part Cade Lommel rebounded from a 3 run first inning to strike out 11 in 5 innings.  Kaleb Sophy recorded a 2 inning save for the SteepleCats. 

Key Moments

  • John Marti got the scoring going with a 2 run single in the bottom of the 1st.

  • Aiden Wilde kept the big inning going with an RBI single.

  • William Sullivan provided the lone run for Upper Valley, with a solo homer run 

 

 How it happened 

  • Chris Cannizzaro walked and Jeremy Lea doubled in the first setting the tone for Marti’s go ahead hit.

  • Charles Middleton reached on an error before Wilde’s RBI single.

  • The game ended on a 6-4-3 double play turned by Michael Kluska and Marti.

Coach Dailey’s Thoughts: “We were able to take advantage of an uncomfortable pitcher early on, Wilfrido commanded the zone and had great fielding behind him.” 

 

Game 2:

In game two Jordan Yoder got the ball for the Cats and he struck out 6 in 4 innings giving up just one run.  His counterpart from Upper Valley, Cameron Bye went 4.2 innings striking out 5 and did not allow a run. Zane Kmietek come on for a 6 out save to wrap up the Nighthawk win.

Key Moments

  • It was scoreless pitchers duel through 3, before Alan Roden drove in the games 1st run, driving in Max Viera.

  • The Nighthawks got to relief pitcher Noah Niznik in the 5th, scoring 2 runs on back to back 2-out singles by Parker Haskin and Viera.

  • The Cats threatened in the 5th after singles by Justin Grech and Cannizzaro, before Lucas Donlan flew to the warning track to end the frame.
