South Kingston – Danbury used some clutch situational hitting to defeat the Ocean State Waves 1-0 Thursday night.

Still looking for their first win of the month of July, the Westerners turned to Joe Vail, who was coming off of a stellar outing against Keene, allowing just one run in six innings of work. He followed that up by holding the Waves scoreless through five innings of work. However, the top scoring offense in the NECBL would fail to mount any offense through the first seven innings.

In the top of the eighth, Danbury would push across a run thanks to Lyndon Weaver. After knocking a double down the left field line, Weaver would advance to third after an error by Ocean State with no one out. However, Jack McCarthy and Justin Jordan would strike out consecutively, bringing Nick Lorusso to the plate with two outs.

After taking two strikes, Lorusso would knock an RBI single to centerfield, giving the Westerners the lead.

“The first pitch was a slider that was a little bit high. The second pitch I thought was way outside,” said Lorusso. “I just stayed calm. He went slider again and I got enough of it to put it into centerfield.”

From there, Pete Bloomberg would close out the game, following Vail with four scoreless innings to pick up the win, snapping their eight game losing streak. While his usual outings lasted one inning at school, Bloomberg would lock in for this longest outing of the year.

“I was telling myself to trust myself,” said Bloomberg. “I tried not to do too much with my stuff. I know we have a good defense behind me. So I did not want to let anyone on.”

Although the team endured a long losing streak, it was another chapter in the series of streaks that occur during summer ball.

“It’s all about streaks,” said manager Josh Parrow. “You can go on bad ones, you can go on good ones. We’ve been on the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. If we can maintain sea level, we have a good chance to play postseason baseball.”

Danbury travels to in-state rival Mystic for another contest with the Schooners Friday night.
