Danbury – Valley scored 10 runs in the final three innings to shock the Westerners and walk away with the 13-8 win.
Valley, the two-time defending NECBL champions got on the board in the top of the first inning courtesy of a leadoff walk and a pair of single to give the Blue Sox an early lead against Brian Rodriguez, who would settle down and get out of the inning, avoiding further damage.
Danbury however, would see Valley’s early run and raise them two of their own. With one out and Alex Baratta on first after a single, left fielder Caleb Upshaw launched his fourth home run over the left field fence to give Danbury the 2-1 lead after one inning. The Westerners would add onto the lead in the bottom of the third on an RBI double by Nick Lorusso to make it 3-1.
Valley pushed across a run in the top of the fourth to make it a one run game after a sacrifice fly by Michael Wroth, cutting the Danbury lead to 3-2. Danbury would respond in a big way in the bottom of the fifth and sixth. Behind the power of five hits, including home runs from Baratta and Noah Dickerson to open the lead to five runs.
In their recent loss to the Keene Swampbats, sloppy Danbury defense was the issue. In the top of the seventh inning, it played a role once again. Behind three errors in the inning, Valley managed to take advantage with three runs, making it an 8-6 Danbury lead. They tacked on one more run in the top of the eighth to make it a one-run game as the late innings progressed.
However, Austin Gussman, who threw two scoreless innings in his first appearance in more than two years against Ocean State, would struggle, giving up the tying run on an RBI single from Natale Monastra. Gussman would load the bases with one out, ending his night and bringing in Christian Allegretti. After walking in the go-ahead run, Travis Holt, who pinch ran in the eighth inning put the exclamation point on the game with a grand slam to left field.
Danbury travels to Martha’s Vineyard Saturday in hopes of stopping the losing streak at four.
