South Kingston – Danbury scored six runs over the final two innings on their way to a thrilling 12-11 victory over the Ocean State Waves Sunday night.
Danbury got on the board in the top of the first thanks to a long drive to centerfield off the bat of right fielder Noah Dickerson for a two-run home run to make it 2-0 before the Wave could get to the plate. It would give starting pitcher Nick Borek a lead as he toed the rubber for his first start of the summer.
After working a perfect first inning, Borek would give up the lead in the bottom of the second while walking three in the frame and giving up two runs, one on an RBI single by Dillon Morton and an RBI walk by Ian Ostberg.
Although they entered the game winners of five in a row, Danbury looked for a little extra energy in Rhode Island. They got some of it along with tempers flaring in the top of the third. With runners on second and third and two outs after already pushing across a run, Sonny Uliana singled to left, scoring Justin Jordan but Caleb Upshaw would run over catcher John Cristino, which resulted in emptying the benches.
From there, it was game on. In the bottom half of the inning, Elijah Dunham would unload on a Borek fastball and send it into the trees for a long home run to cut the deficit to one. Ocean State would tie it in the following inning, making it 4-4 after four innings of play.
Danbury would jump out in front once again in the sixth inning as Waves starting pitcher Trevor Pittman began to run out of steam. Pittman would allow a leadoff single to Nick Lorusso before Jay Curtis would rope an RBI double into the right-center field gap, scoring Lorusso. The Westerners would proceed to load the bases with no one out but only could get a lone run out of it, caring a 6-4 lead into the bottom of the sixth.
After a strong start to the sixth, the defense and pitching struggled. Although Ocean State only had one hit, they managed to push five runs across the plate thanks to two Danbury errors and two walks.
The Westerners did no go down quietly in the ninth however. They managed to push across a run and load the bases with no one out, sending the go-ahead run to the plate. Justin Jordan walked and Alex Barrata grounded out to put the tying run on third with two away for Noah Dickerson. He took the first pitch and ripped it into right field, scoring two and giving the Westerners the 12-11 lead.
“He flicked me on a first pitch slider which froze me pretty well,” said Dickerson. “I was sitting fastball but I saw it out of his hand. It was down and away but I put a good swing on it and put it into right field.”
The win is credited to Austin Gussman while the loss is charged to Billy Creger. The win extends the Westerners winning streak to six. After an up and down game emotionally, Danbury finds a way to win it.
“We’ve been facing a lot of adversity with the weather. I told them to expect that more since we’re at the top,” said manager Josh Parrow. “It’s not lonely at the top. They deserve this. It doesn’t matter how much we’re down. We’re coming for you.”
They look to continue it when they travel to Newport to face off against the Gulls Monday evening.
