Big Green Back on Track Heading into Winter Break
Date: Nov 16, 2022
Hanover, NH - The single game of this past weekend was not the result the team was hoping for, but was still a solid outcome against a top 25 team.
The first period was a great battle on both sides, with neither team scoring––but several chances on both ends. With 1:50 left in the first, a Hawks forward attempted to finish a check on defenseman Ty Teodori, who evaded the hit. The player flew into the boards, popping the plexiglass out of its slot. The delay lasted over 25 minutes, leading to the final 2 minutes of the first period being tacked on to the second period.
When the facility was repaired and play finally resumed, the second period was filled with more exciting plays. Saint Anselm scored two goals in the first 3 minutes of the second period, giving them a confident lead. Two minutes later, Tyler Baum took a rocket of a shot from the point to cut the Hawks' lead in half. However, the Big Green took a penalty late in the second and the Hawks finished the second frame in the lead, 3-1.
Saint Anselm opened the third period by scoring early, giving them a 4-1 lead. Chris McCorkle took no time waiting to respond, scoring a goal assisted by Matt Armstrong and Joe Signorelli on the following shift. A few shifts later, McCorkle moved the puck to Signorelli off of an Armstrong face-off win, which Signorelli buried top corner to cut the Hawks lead to just 1 goal (2 for blue). While the Big Green surged back and nearly tied the game several times, they were unable to do so. With only two minutes left, the Big Green took a penalty that would last the remainder of regulation. Saint Anselm would capitalize with their second power play goal of the game, adding to their conference-leading power-play success.
Coach Gary Smith was very impressed with the effort his team put forth, and has been overall pleased with the progress and improvement the team has made since he joined as head coach.
The team has 4 conference games remaining, and 2 non-conference games remaining in the season, including a trip to Boston this weekend to play Harvard and UMass-Lowell.
