Big Green Back on Track Heading into Winter Break
Date: Nov 16, 2022
Hanover, NH –
The Big Green’s season has been electric thus far, with an undefeated record through the Fall term for the first time in team history. Strong point production from upperclassmen paired with newfound skill and depth from freshmen and transfers contributed to the impressive start. The team currently sits at #3 in the ACHA Atlantic Rankings, used to determine seeding for ACHA Regionals and Nationals.
Two members of the Big Green are among the top 50 players in the nation in scoring (out of a league with over 2,500 players). Chris McCorkle and Jack Mascali have been finding the scoresheet consistently with 31 and 28 points, respectively. Senior forward Emerson Mahoney is not far behind with 27 points in only 11 games. On the back end, freshman Chris Picard is having a Norris trophy-caliber season with 21 points in 11 games thus far. Between the pipes, transfer goalie Michael Cullen has exceeded expectations with a 9-0 record, a .932 save percentage, and a 1.44 goals-against average – top 3 in the nation in all stats.
The term was highlighted by a three-game road trip to Maine, where the team defeated Thomas College, St. Joseph’s College of Maine, and the University of New England. Thomas College hosted the boys with a packed arena. The energy of the arena got the best of the team, as Thomas scored first. Dartmouth surged back to score 9 unanswered goals and silence the vibrant crowd. The next afternoon, the boys stormed into St. Joe’s and scored several times early and thwarted a St. Joe’s comeback to win the matchup 7-3. Sunday morning, after 2 hard-fought games, Dartmouth defeated UNE 5-1 to come home with a clean sweep weekend.
The term was finished with a thrilling matchup at home against Ivy League rival Harvard. The game was back and forth all through the first period until Matt Armstrong tipped a rocket of a point shot from Parker Pickett with less than 30 seconds remaining in the first frame. The game continued the defensive gridlock for most of the 2nd period until Brent Bur- I mean Chris Picard ripped a shot through traffic to find the net for his 7th goal of the year. Several players found the net as the offense began to flow in the 3rd period, and the boys took care of business with a 6-1 win.
The team will face a tough winter schedule with a number of ranked opponents on the docket and a loss of depth across the board. Matchups against #5 University of New Haven, #8 Harvard, #10 Worcester Polytechnic Institute, and #13 Wentworth Institute of Technology headline the schedule for the winter. And these matchups will certainly require an increased contribution from depth players in the organization, as several members of the Big Green will be on their off-term, a product of the Dartmouth “D-Plan”.
The boys will return to action on January 17th when they travel to Boston, MA to rematch #13 W.I.T., the team’s lone tie game of the fall term. Check back in for more updates on the season when the boys arrive back in Hanover in January.
