Big Green Back on Track Heading into Winter Break
Date: Nov 16, 2022
Game #12 - Dartmouth 15, Columbia 5
Game #13 - Dartmouth 6, Penn 4
Philadelphia, PA - The Dartmouth Men's Club Hockey team had nothing shy of a challenging beginning to their weekend.
Immediately after a 9 hour bus ride from Hanover, the boys hopped right onto the ice to face-off with Columbia. The game started off very evenly matched and tightly tested. Tyler Baum scored his first of three goals early on the power-play to open up scoring. Just a few minutes later, however, Columbia answered back to tie the game up 1-1. After some hard fought tied hockey, freshman Jack Mascali found the back of the net for his 4th goal of the season. Goals from former goalie Mike Colon and team scoring leader Emerson Mahoney broke the scoring open. The Big Green made a goaltending switch after the first, putting senior Scott Bohn in net for Rob Deangelo.
Matt Armstrong scored back-to-back goals to give the Big Green a healthy 6-1 lead. Just 18 seconds after Armstrong's second goal, Chris Connors wheeled down the ice for another Dartmouth goal. As back and fourth play continued, both teams added a series of goals as the second period ended favoring the Big Green 11-4.
The third period was much of the same, as many of the team's younger players took the spotlight. Chris Connors grabbed another goal and Ty Teodori, playing his first game and likely only game at forward, scored two goals in 30 seconds. Brian Drisdelle also registered his first collegiate goal after capitalizing on a thread-the-needle pass from Derek Lue in the corner.
Less than 12 hours later, Dartmouth took the ice to face-off against the Quakers of UPenn in a morning showdown.
The Big Green came out flying vs. the Quakers, and John Schlachtenhaufen scored a goal after a great effort to keep the puck in the zone, followed by a shot from the point that went top corner. The game carried on, and the Big Green led 1-0 after the first.
The second period continued in Dartmouth's favor, as Matt Armstrong threw a puck on net that Chris McCorkle was able to capitalize on to give Dartmouth the 2-0 lead. The following shift, essentially the same play took place as John Schlachtenhaufen took a shot from the point and Emerson Mahoney buried the rebound. Chris McCorkle received a beauty of a thread pass from Sam Forstner which put him on a breakaway. McCorkle buried the shot post and in to increase the team's lead. Penn scored in the middle of the second frame to cut Dartmouth's lead to 4-1 after two periods.
The Quakers surged back hard in the third, but the Big Green were able to hold off the wave. Penn scored two straight to make it a 4-3 game. Later in the third, Tyler Baum moved the puck up to Joe Signorelli who had a beauty of a toe drag to beat both defensemen followed by a five hole goal to give the Big Green a 5-3 lead. After a penalty against Dartmouth, Penn finished a power play goal, bringing it back to a 1 goal game. However, the boys were able to hold off and wind down the game, finishing it off with an empty netter from Jack Mascali.
The team faces off against Harvard tomorrow at 2 pm to decide this year's Ivy League Champion.
