Big Green Back on Track Heading into Winter Break
Date: Nov 16, 2022
This one I've been especially looking forward to, because I feel like him and I have a lot of similar personality traits. Want to learn more? Keep reading.
[Pax]: Hey Chrees, hope the preseason is treating you well. What's it like being the only black kid on the team?
-[Chris]: "Hey Pax, so great to finally meet you. Am I really the only black kid? That's rather unusual honestly, but I guess I'd say I'm kind of a Cleveland Brown-type character, hopefully bringing a bit of a different spin to the locker room. Weird question though."
Gotcha, just seemed like a good opener, I don't know. So, how can you like the Maple Leafs?
-"Uh, I guess by just watching their games. My dad is a huge leafs fan and we really bonded over that growing up, so I definitely have some good ties to the Leafs as a fan. There's a picture of me as a 18 month old with a Maple Leafs jersey and hat on, so I'd definitely say I'm a big Leafs fan regardless of past years' performances."
Jeez, I asked a simple question, not for your baby pics. Who do you think you are? What kind of music do you listen to?
-"Obviously the classics (Travis Scott, Post Malone, Migos, Lil Uzi), and also some DMV [D.C., Maryland, Virginia] underground artists like Willtharapper, Q Da Fool, Shabazz, Big Flock, etc."
You consider Lil Uzi 'classics'? That's inane. And I don't know a single artist you named in that second group. Listen to actual music, please. What controls do you use for NHL?
-"I'm a big stick skill guy. The controls just feel intuitive to me, its like the controller is an extension of my arm. I have serious trust issues with people who use hybrid or NHL 94 controls."
Interesting, quite some thought put into that one. What was your career like up to college?
-"I was terrible when I was younger, then somehow got good enough to play 'AAA' in bantams and midgets for Team Maryland and the Skipjacks Hockey Club, then fell off and have been trying to claw my way back up ever since."
Yeah, to the average spectator you look exactly like someone who use to be good at hockey but thinks they're still good. What is the biggest animal you think you could kill if you were given a sword?
-"I would have to say a Bison. I've actually seen one since I've been in college out on a wilderness trip, and it almost nabbed one of my buddies. Definitely need to get revenge."
That's crazy, is your buddy alright? Why are you a lefty?
-"I don't know, probably because I'm a huge follower and my dad is a lefty. Just kidding, I think kids just have ways that they feel comfortable holding the twiggy, and that was the one for me."
Apparently, if you are right-handed, you are supposed to use a left-handed stick. Weird, right? What's your face-off taking technique?
-"Well a lot of my skill development comes from the boys over at 'On the Bench', and as they say 'Get low, both hands on the bottom half of the shaft, and take some big hacks at the other player's lumber. And if you know you're gonna lose a draw, just fall on the puck.'"
Not a bad technique, I think that's actually what Ken Hitchcock teaches too. What is the worst advice anyone has ever given you that you actually took?
-"Hmm, good question. One time when I was younger, my little brother had a hypothesis that if you do a 360 while jumping for a dunk, you would get higher and be more likely to land the dunk. I tried it and ended up slamming my face into the base of the hoop. Definitely a rough go for me."
You let you're little brother convince you spinning in a circle would make you jump higher? That must translate into unreal hockey IQ. Who is the team you're least looking forward to playing this year?
-"Definitely Norwich. Those games got a bit chippy last year, and some impulsive actions were taken on the ice. Those guys definitely have my number."
Yeah, you're dead. Thoughts on some of our games taking place at Campion rather than Thompson?
-"I think it'll be great, the guys are looking forward to it. Campion is a great facility and they're awesome for hosting us for some games. It definitely beats having some 1 A.M. game times."
Yeah, I think it should be a good move. Only downside is it'll be mighty difficult to fit the sellout crowds into a more intimate barn like that. What is your favorite pre-game song?
-"Wild Out by Borgore featuring Waka Flocka and Paige. Great memories with DeMatha hockey and that song. Gets the people going."
Here's one for the noggin. Do you think there are more doors open or closed in the world right now, and why?
-"I've gotta go closed, just because like every residential door in the world is closed, and like bathrooms and office doors are mostly closed, so it seems like it's more closed by a long shot."
Would you rather fight Steve Ott or block a shot from Zdeno Chara taken from the opposite goal line, with no pads?
-"Will Chara definitely hit the net?"
He's Zdeno Chara. Do with that information what you will.
-"I'll take Ott. I've fought bigger opponents before. Anne Arundel county is a scary place."
Oh yeah, that median household income is terrifying. Who is your favorite Family Guy character?
-"Definitely Carol Channing in the episode she boxes Mike Tyson and wins. She was a massive underdog in that fight, but kept grinding and ended up winning a huge tilly."
Thanks for tuning in to another episode. We're looking to get a few more episodes in before the season opener, and get cracking with the dozen new players we have this season.
