Meet the Players - Episode 10: Matt Gardner

Date:  Source: Dartmouth Club Hockey

Nicest kid I've ever met. He said "thank you for asking" after every question I asked him during the interview.

[Pax]: What's your favorite color?

-[Matt]: Blue, generally, but specifically navy. Don’t worry, though, I’m not about to defect to New Haven.

Oh god, you scared me there for a second. What was the coolest prep school you played against?

-"Yeah, we pretty much hated most of the schools we played against. If I’m being objective, though, it would have to be Groton School, since they do have a beautiful rink."

Beautiful. Would you rather be a pro skier or pro hockey player?

-"Pro hockey player for sure. Skiing’s awesome, but a hockey player can actually make that a career, and there’s nothing like pond hockey on a weekend in January to show that hockey is way more fun to play for your whole life."

Makes sense, let's hope ski patrol doesn't get in the way of your talents to the team this year. Who was the most fun team you ever played for?

-"That would be my senior year team at Middlesex School. The guys were all of my best friends, and we had a ton of fun times in the locker room and on road trips and such."

Sounds about half as fun as Dartmouth hockey, so it was probably unreal. How many times in a row do you think you could get the puck high of the glass out of the D-Zone?

-"Forehand? Give it 5. Backhand? Every time, but put it at 30 to be conservative."

Every time? Bold assertion, Cotton. Which side of the bed do you sleep on?

-"That’s a pretty personal question, but usually the left side (looking down from above) if I have a choice."

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to pry. What are your Collis late night smoothie ingredients of choice?

-"I basically just pick most of the things I like and throw them together. Usually peaches, bananas, strawberries, honey, and guava juice."

A real Gordon Ramsay you are. Does your family use the curly-fry looking light bulbs?

-"No way. I’m an engineering student, so I’m all about LEDs when a bulb goes out."

I thought the curly fry ones were better for the environment or something. What does being an engineering student have to do with your family's light bulb choices? Favorite stand up comedian?

-"Robin Williams. Lightning quick and brilliantly clever."

Rest in peace to the G.O.A.T. Black tape or white tape on your blade and why?

-"Black tape. I used to be a white tape guy, but the black tape seems to have a little more grip. It’s not like a “hide the puck” thing or something though. That logic makes no sense."

True, it does grab the puck harder. I actually thought the "hide the puck" thing was legit until 3 seconds ago when you said it makes no sense (I'm easily swayed by others' opinions). Do you own any Lululemon? and if not, why not?

-"100%. You can’t be a hockey player without it, and the quality is undeniable."

That's actually a true statement. And statistically speaking, the more Lululemon you own, the better you are at hockey. What is your favorite pattern on a tie?

-"I like stripes or small patterned logos and icons usually. Middle ground between solid-color ties and something that’s a bit more ambitious."

Woah, woah woah. Ambitious? Slow your horses. Who is your favorite author?

"I really like John Steinbeck. I haven’t read his work in a long time, but I’ve always enjoyed his immersive descriptions and fluid style."

I love immersion as well. Who's the funniest person on club hockey?

-"Probably Scott Bohn. Or Coach Gill. The minivan ride down to Philadelphia and back Frey and I had with them was an experience I won’t soon forget."

Definitely funny guys. Favorite Family Guy character?

-"Probably Peter. Seth MacFarlane’s accents are great, and I find Peter’s really funny as a person from outside Boston."

Quite the interview, not much else to say. K bye.
