Athens picked up three of a possible four points in games against Richardson Division rivals in CCHL2 action on the weekend.
The Aeros hosted the Brockville Tikis at Centre 76 on Saturday night. Although the home team was outshooting the visitors by a wide margin, Brockville evened the score at two midway through the second period. However, Athens took the lead for good a short time later when Eric Hulford scored his second goal of the night and the Aeros added four more to win 7-2. Hulford had a hat trick and was named first star. Dylan Stacey scored twice and chipped in with two assists to earn the second-star honour. The Tikis’ Adam Van Ettinger was named third star.
Charles Grimard stopped 13 of the 15 shots he faced in net for Athens. Brockville goaltender Curtis Stewart made 42 saves in the loss.
Athens opened the weekend in Westport on Friday night. The Aeros had a 3-2 lead late in the third period, but Simon Corriveau tied the game with about 24 seconds left in regulation. There was no scoring in overtime; Westport picked up the win in the shootout. Corriveau was named first star. Ryan Harper scored one of the Athens goals and was named second star. The Rideaus edged the Aeros 40-38 in shots. Alex Zoutis picked up the victory for Westport; William Rawski was in net for the Aeros.
Athens (22-12-4-5) will host Westport this Saturday, Feb. 11 at 7:30 p.m. The fourth-place Aeros had a two-point lead on the Rideaus with two games in hand as of Sunday. The regular season ends on Feb. 26.
Brockville opened the week by edging the Ottawa Canadians 2-1 at the memorial centre on Wednesday night.Tom Callaghan’s second goal of the game came 34 second into overtime to give the home team the victory. He was named first star of the game. The second star honour went to Tikis netminder Stewart, who made 43 saves. Van Ettinger chipped in with a pair of assists for Brockville.
The sixth-place Tikis (16-25-1-0) host Prescott on Wednesday at 7:45 p.m. and travel to Renfrew on Friday for an 8 p.m. start against the Timberwolves. Brockville will host Perth on Wednesday, Feb. 15 at 7:45.
The Prescott Flyers were at home against Westport on Saturday night. Prescott had built a 3-1 lead by late in the second period on goals by Shawn Sloan, Shawn Patterson and Devon Burns, but Corey Symington cut the lead in half with 37 seconds left in the period. His second goal of the game came at 8:08 of the third, and Michael Anson scored the game-winner at 16:20 to give the visiting Rideaus the victory. Westport outshot Prescott 31-23. Blake Kettyle had a goal and three assists and was named first star. Burns, who also chipped in with two helpers for the Flyers, was selected second star. Symington was named third star. Lee Spurgeon picked up the win in net for the Rideaus.
Now in seventh place in the division two points behind Brockville, Prescott (12-24-6-1) welcomes Renfrew to the Leo Boivin Memorial Centre on Saturday, Feb. 11; puck drop is just after 7:30.
