Stoney Creek Generals dominate Dundas, Thorold in weekend wins

The Stoney Creek Generals look poised for another run in the Allan Cup Hockey playoffs this year, after two convincing victories against Thorold and Dundas last weekend.

In its latest matchup, broadcast live by Cable 14, Stoney Creek throttled the Thorold Athletics 7-3 Jan. 14 at Gateway Ice Centre.

Tyler Donati led the Generals with two goals. His brother Justin had three assists and Jarrett Konkle, Ryan O’Marra, Jason Popek, Lee Martin and Matt Dzieduszycki also scored for Stoney Creek (13-3). Dzieduszycki added two assists to cap a spectacular weekend that saw him rack up a total of seven points.

Defender Sean Blanchard had two assists and leads the team with 21 helpers this season.

 

The Generals remain on top of the six-team league standings, six points ahead of second-place Whitby.

Stoney Creek outshot Thorold 56-27. The Generals’ Matthew Sagrott made 24 saves to keep his perfect record in tact at 5-0.

The Generals were equally dominant last Friday in a 7-2 road victory against the Dundas Real McCoys.

Dzieduszycki led Stoney Creek with three goals and one assist in Dundas. Konkle, Nathan Pageau, O’Marra and Conor O’Donnell scored the Generals’ other goals. Deron Cousens added three assists for Stoney Creek.

Stoney Creek outshot the McCoys 36-30. Generals netminder Daniel Svedin improved to 4-0 on the season and lowered his league-leading goals against average to a stellar 2.25.

Stoney Creek should face some tougher competition this weekend when it faces the second-place Whitby Dunlops Saturday night at 7:15 at Gateway Ice Centre.

Whitby (11-4) defeated the Generals 6-3 Dec. 10 at the Iroquois Park Sports Centre, handing Stoney Creek its only road loss of the season. Whitby is 4-3 on the road while Stoney Creek is 7-2 at home this season.
