New Jersey beats Washington 6-4 after comeback scare

Washington tried its best to erase a three-goal deficit, but New Jersey would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 6-4.

New Jersey took a 6-3 lead during the third period, only to have Washington storm back on a Caleb Moretz goal 4:50 into the third period to pull to two goals down.

Keith Bishop was all over the ice for New Jersey, as he tallied two goals and one assist in the win. Bishop scored the first of his two goals at 12:24 into the first period to make the score 2-1 New Jersey. Bishop's next tally made the score 4-3 New Jersey with 10:31 left in the second period. Gilford Daley assisted on the tally.

New Jersey's offense rang up 41 shots on Washington's net. New Jersey surpassed its usual scoring output this season. New Jersey averages 3.5 goals per game. The defensemen of New Jersey were also effective in Washington's zone, and came away with two goals.

New Jersey also had goals scored by Chris Conway, who had two and Matthew Brown and Toby DiPaolo, who scored one goal each. In addition, New Jersey received assists from Zachary Toy, Nick Velez, Justin Rosario, Justin Grossman, and Trent Shanley, who each chipped in one.

Washington put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow New Jersey to score on any of its three power plays.

Washington was led by Gabriel Rankin, who grabbed two goals and two assists. Rankin scored the first of his two goals at zero seconds into the first period to make the score 1-0 Washington. Stanley Skorulski picked up the assist. Rankin's next tally made the score 3-3 with 16:21 left in the second period. Augustus Stevens assisted on the tally. Washington also got points from Moretz, who also had two goals and one assist. More assists for Washington came via Derek Scoggins, who had one.

New Jersey's Spencer Reu stopped 20 shots out of the 24 that he faced. New Jersey incurred four minutes in penalty time with two minors. Lane Wood made 35 saves for Washington on 40 shots. Washington totaled 17 minutes in penalty time with one minor and one major and went 0-for-2 on the power play. Washington ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Skorulski was ejected from the game.
