Washington beats District of Columbia 5-3 after comeback scare

Washington survived a determined comeback attempt by District of Columbia on the way to a 5-3 win.

Washington took a 5-2 lead during the third period, only to have District of Columbia storm back on a Matt Cremen goal 15:42 into the third period to pull to two goals down.

Gabriel Rankin had two goals and two assists to lead Washington. Rankin scored the first of his two goals at 6:51 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Washington. Stanley Skorulski assisted on the tally. Rankin's next tally made the score 4-2 Washington with 17:42 left in the third period. Washington had gotten the advantage when District of Columbia's Tiger Lindsay was sent off for slashing. Caleb Moretz picked up the assist.

Washington additionally got points from Moretz, who also had two goals and one assist. Dimo Golovko also scored for Washington. In addition, Washington received assists from Derek Scoggins and Jay Harris, who contributed one each.

District of Columbia forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up six minors and one major for 27 minutes in penalty time. District of Columbia had been averaging 14.0 minutes in penalties per game.

District of Columbia was led by Trevor Dixon, who racked up one goal and one assist. Dixon scored 3:02 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Washington. Devin Lowe assisted on the tally.
