Saints Douse Inferno
Date: Feb 12, 2012
The Central Wisconsin Saints earned a three game sweep against the Indianapolis Inferno in their final home series of the season. The Saints won by scores of 6-1, 9-1 and 12-0. The Saints clawed their way back to within one game of .500 on the season now sitting at 17-18-4-0.
The Saints saw contributions from up and down the lineup in a trio of dominant performances. Garrett Avery returned to the lineup on Sunday morning just in time to record the first shutout of the Saints’ season. The shutout was just the second clean sheet for a goaltender in team history.
Max Culp also scored his 50th goal as a Saint on Friday night, becoming just the second player in the team’s history to accomplish that feat. Culp now sits second all-time in career points and goals and is drawing close to both single season records as well. Culp’s 72 points leave just 4 points and 5 goals shy of Anthony Cantalupo’s marks set in 2009-2010. Culp is also second overall in league scoring.
Culp recorded 12 total points in the three game series. 10 of those points were assists moving Culp one assist above previous record hold Magnus Johansson for most single season assists. Culp now has 40 assists and at least 8 more games with which to pad his record.
The win on Sunday morning also clinched a playoff spot for Central Wisconsin. This is welcome news to a team that until recently was unsure of its playoff prospects due to a poor start. With six games remaining Central Wisconsin is assured of the 4th seed in the Western Division. Their next series is on the road against the Chicago Bulldogs. That is the team they will face in the first round of the playoffs and currently the league and division leader.
