Blythe Crippled by 14 Run 3rd Inning.

Date:  Source: NABL: Arizona Winter League

After a scoreless 1st inning, Blythe takes a 1-0 lead going into the 3rd, that would be it from Blythe in this one, as the Yuma Scorpions physically and mentally destroy the morale of the Blythe Heat in the 3rd inning posting too many runs for the scoreboard to handle in the top of the 3rd. After a walk by Varun Kapila, Brandon Mims singles, as does Jean Paul Rodriguez, as does Deaun Williams, as does Lucas Shaw, as does Michael Brown, and after a wild pitch, the Heat found themselves down 5-1. It wouldn't even be close to stopping there as Vincent Spilotro comes up and strokes a Triple worth 2 more runs. Now down 8-1 without any outs in the inning, they finally get an out as Varun Kapila comes up for the 2nd time and jumped out of the box in an effort to work the count and have pitches called as balls. Kapila went down on strikes and then had words for home plate umpire Tony Ray, as he tried to figure out how he struck out on pitches that he deemed to be well inside, off the plate. Play resumes, bases are loaded as a ball finds it's way to the backstop, bringing across another run. Now down 9-1 with 1 out in the inning, a ball is hit to 3rd base, an error happens scoring another run. Lucas Shaw steps up to the plate, smashing a Double into the gap in right, scoring another 2. 1 out still, the score is 13-1 when Jason Winters knocks in a run with a sac fly, bringing up 2 outs with a score of 14-1. Enter Varun Kapila again, for his 3rd at-bat of the inning, this time....the result is the same, jumping out of the way of pitches, finally earning a strike-out called on the inside corner as Varun jumped out of the box. More words for Tony Ray, as the umpire retreats to the Blythe dugout not wanting to eject Kapila. The rest of the game had no effect on the outcome as the final score of the contest this afternoon was 16-3. One bright note, in fact, the only bright note for the Blythe Heat was when Phillip Rowland unleashed into a pitch from Vincent Dailey, planting it over the left field fence, which accounted for the only other 2 runs the Heat would come up with. Aside from the Homerun from Rowland, Dailey pitched flawlessly, only giving up 2 hits (both to Rowland) in 4 innings pitched this afternoon, his name was already placed in the Win column, after the 14 run 3rd inning. Out of arms, the Blythe squad turns to veteran pitcher, Les Lancaster, former Major League pitcher and current scout for the Philadelphia Phillies, in attendance at the AWL to scout players and give assistance. He threw the last 2 innings for the Heat wearing an ear to ear grin the entire time out on the mound. It was a great show out on the field of Desert Sun Stadium this afternoon, every fan leaving happy.
