Somerton Stings Calexico in 6th inning rally

Date:  Source: NABL: Arizona Winter League

It didn't look good for Somerton in the first inning, as starting pitcher Yoshimune Tsujii, took the hill for the Stingers, giving up a lead off single to Calexico Shortstop Danny Dyer, who would score on a single to center from Catcher, Chaz Norman, ending the inning with a 1-0 lead over the Stingers, who would not score in the bottom half of the inning. But the Somerton squad were not ready to throw in the towel quite yet, tying the score 1-1 in the bottom of the 2nd inning. It appeared we were to have a ballgame on our hands this afternoon at Desert Sun Stadium, with the best finish we've seen thus far. It got bad for the Stingers the very next inning when Keigo Miyagi, the Somerton DH put a ball in the air towards right field to lead off the inning. Don DiPetta, the Outlaw Right Fielder took a rough route to the ball and it ended up on the ground after bouncing off Don's glove for an error which left Miyagi standing on 3rd base with no outs in the inning. Followed by a Double from Bryce Avila where Miyagi easily scored. Before you know it, Chaz Norman comes up for a second time and knocks a single scoring Avila from second and the Outlaws took a 3-1 lead. Following an RBI Single from Mario Flores in the bottom half of the inning, there would be no score and a 3-2 deficite for the Stingers. When all hope seemed lost for the Somerton team, the bottom half of the 6th inning arrives. Enter team batting leader, Catcher, Jared Gore who started the game on the bench for this one, giving Joseph Kala some time behind the dish. Gore comes in to hit for DH Dakotah Bailey, who was 0 for 2 with 2 strike outs on the day, a wise choice from Manager Jorge Alvarez. Gore steps up the the plate with runners on 1st and 2nd and 1 out. Jared gets into a fastball and drives it over the head of Outlaws Center Fielder, LJ Watson, who takes off on a dead sprint for the center field sprint on contact. Needless to say, 2 runs come across on Gore's 2 RBI double in the bottom of the 6th inning, making the pinch hitter the hero of the game for the Stingers, bringing his team back from the depths of defeat. The inning ends and Tsujii, who has been solid all game for Somerton, comes in to finish off the shocked Outlaws 1-2-3 in the top of the 7th to secure a complete game victory for himself, and his team. Tsujii went the distance in this one giving up only 5 hits, 1 walk, while striking out 3. This was one for the fans, a dramatic finish for the Somerton Stingers, who can chalk one up in the Win column.
