A late first period goal and early second period tally gave the Calgary Inferno a lead they would never relinquish as Les Canadiennes fell 8-3 in the Clarkson Cup Final on Sunday afternoon at Canadian Tire Centre.

An enthusiastic crowd of 4,082 fans, including numerous Les Canadiennes supporters, turned out for the CWHL championship game, which was broadcast nationwide on Sportsnet and streamed for U.S. viewers on CWHLLive.com.

Rebecca Johnston opened the scoring 2:26 into the first period while Marie-Philip Poulin replied on the power play to tie it five minutes later. The teams traded opportunities the remainder of the period before Brianne Jenner connected on the power play to put Calgary ahead 2-1 at 15:53.

Jessica Campbell extended Calgary’s lead 2:19 into the second period and Blayre Turnbull added another nearly eight minutes later.

Les Canadiennes thought they had pulled within two but officials waved it off due to a player being in the crease. They kept the pressure on, though, and were rewarded when Noémie Marin poked home a rebound at the side of the crease at 12:58.

But the Inferno responded quickly, with Turnbull notching her second of the game 23 seconds later.

Campbell picked up her second of the day on the power play at 5:34 of the third period. Johnston added another just over four minutes later with a wrister from the left circle.

Kim Deschênes cut into the lead at 12:45 but Jenner sealed it with a shorthanded tally into an empty net with less than a minute remaining.
