LES CANADIENNES CLINCH FIRST OVERALL IN WEEKEND SPLIT VS. CALGARY INFERNO

Date:  Source: CWHL: Les Canadiennes

Les Canadiennes rebounded from a rare loss this season to clinch first place and the 2015-16 CWHL Chairman’s Trophy as they split their weekend set against the Calgary Inferno.

After suffering just their third loss of the season on Saturday, Les Canadiennes (19-3-0) turned in a strong effort on Sunday to secure their spot atop the CWHL standings for the seventh time (out of nine) in club history.

Calgary held Montreal’s high-flying offence at bay in the two games, but that didn’t stop several players from climbing up the CWHL scoring ladder. Ann-Sophie Bettez added an assist to move to within three points of line-mate Marie-Philip Poulin, who leads the League with 37 points.  Kim Deschênes picked up a helper to claim sole possession of fourth place in CWHL scoring while Caroline Ouellette’s assist moved her into a tie for fifth place.

The defence has also done its part, with Lauriane Rougeau and captain Cathy Chartrand adding assists to their totals to move into a three-way tie with Inferno blue-liner Hayleigh Cudmore for fourth among League defencemen.

Les Canadiennes will close out the 2015-16 regular season when they host the Boston Blades on Saturday, Feb. 20 (5:30 p.m. ET) and Sunday, Feb. 21 (1:30 p.m. ET) at Étienne-Desmarteau Arena. Saturday’s game will be streamed live on CWHLLive.com.

The club has assured its first-place finish in the playoff rounds, and will host the fourth-place team, the Toronto Furies, in a best-of-three series, taking place Feb. 26-28.

Playoff schedule

Friday, Feb. 26: 6:45 p.m. at Étienne-Desmarteau Arena

Saturday, Feb. 27: 5 p.m. at Bell Sports Complex in Brossard

Sunday, Feb. 28 (if necessary): 3:30 p.m. at Étienne-Desmarteau Arena

Saturday, Feb. 13: Calgary Inferno 4, Les Canadiennes 2

Playing in her first game of the season after being sidelined with an injury, Inferno forward Rebecca Johnston wasted little time in getting into a groove when she punched in the rebound of a Brianne Jenner shot at 15:59 of the first period.

Johnston picked up her second of the night just over two minutes later, driving to the net and beating goaltender Charline Labonté.

Les Canadiennes cut the deficit in half just 46 seconds into the middle frame. Lauriane Rougeau, just behind the net at the goal line, found Noémie Marin in the slot for her third of the season.

Jill Saulnier capped off a perfect passing play to restore Calgary’s two-goal lead at 16:05. Brianne Jenner put the Inferno up by three with an unassisted tally 18 seconds into the third period.

Katia Clément-Heydra brought Les Canadiennes back to within a pair when Kim Deschênes found her in front at 14:18.

Sunday, Feb. 14: Les Canadiennes 2, Calgary Inferno 1

Goaltenders Charline Labonté and Delayne Brian stood tall in the first period, keeping the CWHL’s top two offences off the board.

Les Canadiennes took advantage of the lively boards to finally get one by Brian at 5:47 of the second period. Caroline Ouellette’s shot hit the end boards and Noémie Marin was there to pick up the rebound to give Montreal the 1-0 lead.

Katia Clément-Heydra doubled the lead with her second of the weekend 1:23 into the third period when she picked up the loose puck off a Cathy Chartrand point shot in front of the net.

Brianne Jenner snapped Labonté’s shutout bid when she cut into the slot from the left circle at 14:22.

Labonté earned first star honours with 34 saves on the afternoon, picking up her League-leading 15th win of the season.
