Stratford uses early goal to top Cambridge, 2-1

Brock Heshka gave the Stratford Cullitons the lead in the first period, and the Cambridge Winter Hawks was never able to catch up in a close game that ended 2-1.

Stratford took over the lead for good with a goal by Heshka at 16:38 in the first period. Jared Nash assisted on the tally.

The Cullitons were led by goalie Alexander Brooks-Potts, who finished with 27 saves while allowing one goal. Brooks-Potts certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 3.32 entering the contest.

Stratford's penalty kill excelled, as the Cullitons gave up zero goals despite allowing nine power plays.

Stratford stifled Cambridge's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Cullitons could not produce up to their normal offensive output. Stratford puts an average of 4.6 pucks into the net per game. The Cullitons kept the Winter Hawks' goalie busy throughout the game, and Owen Savory made 29 saves on 31 shots. Stratford was forced to rely heavily on their penalty kill unit throughout the game, as it racked up 32 penalty minutes.

More assists for Stratford came via Tyson Baker, who had one.

Cambridge put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow the Cullitons to score on any of their three power plays.

The Winter Hawks were led by Kyle Heitzner, who scored the team's only goal. Heitzner scored 12:39 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Stratford. Mathieu Mercier picked up the assist.

Cambridge incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors.
