Cambridge outlasts Kitchener, 4-3

The Cambridge Winter Hawks and the Kitchener Dutchmen were evenly matched throughout their contest, but Cambridge made the most of its opportunities and won, 4-3.

The Winter Hawks gained the winning advantage on a goal by Robert Proner 10:13 into the second period and hung on until final buzzer.

Jonathan Giordano had a great game for Cambridge, netting two goals. Giordano scored at 15:33 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Cambridge and again while 1:20 into the second to make the score 2-1 Cambridge.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 12:35 into the first period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

The Winter Hawks were often in penalty trouble, totaling 11 minors and one major for 37 minutes in penalty time. Cambridge surpassed its season average of 28.0 penalty minutes per game.

Cambridge also got a goal from Alex Mutton as well. In addition, Cambridge received assists from Drew Stirling, Matt Harding, and Liam Hurley, who contributed one each and Zack Hedley and Matt Steen, who each chipped in two.

Kitchener racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with nine minors and one major for 43 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 25.0 minutes per game the Dutchmen had been spending in the box. Kitchener excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in seven chances. The Dutchmen's offense operated below their season average. Kitchener puts an average of 5.2 pucks into the net per game. The Dutchmen kept the Winter Hawks' goalie busy throughout the game, and Scott Patton made 37 saves on 40 shots.

Kitchener was helped by Adam Kawalec, who finished with one goal and one assist. Kawalec scored on the power play 3:32 into the second period to make the score 2-2. The Dutchmen had gotten the advantage when Cambridge's Proner was sent off for holding stick. Connor Cole picked up the assist. Kitchener also got points from Cole, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Mark Bzowey also scored for Kitchener. More assists for Kitchener came via Logan Schmidt and Alex Demrovsky, who contributed one each.

Team's Stirling and Cole Cummings were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game. Luke Richardson rejected 23 shots on goal for Kitchener. The Dutchmen registered two goals on nine power play opportunities. For Kitchener, JD Sterne was ejected from the game.
