BERKLEY, Mich. – The Berkley Bruins scored four goals in the third period and held on to defeat the Alpena Flyers 6-5 Saturday night at the Berkley Ice Arena.
Tim Wilson scored two more goals after a hat trick Friday night and added an assist for a three-point game, while older brother Evan Wilson contributed four assists.
“The team didn’t get down as a whole and we believed we could come back,” said Evan Wilson. “Getting that next goal was big and we got it, so we just kept the momentum going to get the ‘W.’”
Alpena led 3-2 after one period and 4-2 after two periods.
“The boys showed heart again tonight to make the comeback,” added Bruins’ forward Tim Muhsman. “We crashed the net and pucks started going in. We showed that we have heart and when we want something, the Bruins go out and get it. We need to come out tomorrow with the same intensity we had in the third period and try to get the ‘W.’”
Tory Shand added a goal and two assists, Alex Anderson a goal plus an assist and Muhsman and Julian Willibey added single goals for Berkley. Willibey's goal at 11:57 of the third period stood as the game-winner.
Dalton Gertsen tacked on a pair of assists for the Bruins.
Berkley goaltender Brent Gaddy (pictured) earned the win in goal in his season debut with 32 saves after relieving starter Jacob Gorzelski, who made just three saves on six shots through the first 12:39 of the game.
Bruins’ head coach Dan Pszenyczny was impressed with his team’s showing, which he said will be solidified with a good performance Sunday afternoon.
“We showed a lot of heart, character and adversity in the game tonight,” said Pszenyczny. “We started off slow, went through some penalty troubles and came back from two goals down in the third to win, which raised the team’s confidence going into tomorrow’s game.”
For Alpena, Tait Froggett tallied three goals with an assist, Garret Bailey a goal and two assists and Sam Charboneau the other goal. Brett LeTourneau started in goal and made 24 saves through 45:49 before Connor Kassuba played 13:41 and suffered the loss, stopping six of eight shots.
The two teams wrap up the weekend series Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m.
