BERKLEY, Mich. – The Berkley Bruins want bygones to be bygones.

After narrowly missing out on the Midwest Junior Hockey League playoffs in 2013-14, the Bruins are using that as motivation this season and want to get out to a fast start and keep pace with the rest of the league.

New head coach Dan Pszenyczny, who came on board as an assistant coach the middle of last year, said the Bruins are brimming with confidence with the season opener just two days away.

“I expect the kids to show up ready to work hard, be focused and make themselves better every practice and game,” Pszenyczny said. “Once the kids get on the same page and understand what myself and (assistant coach Mike) Rumps expect, the success of the team will come.”

Returning forward Tim Muhsman will play on a line with Alex Anderson and Tory Shand, a situation Pszenyczny is excited to see unfold at the Berkley Ice Arena.

“They all bring something different to the line, but have the same understanding, hard work and learning for the game,” said Pszenyczny.

“This year’s team is close, just like it was last year,” Muhsman said. “Guys are buying in to the new system Coach Dan brought us and it’s going to be exciting to watch the Berkley Bruins this year. As for last season, you just throw it in the back of your head and learn from the mistakes that were made and build off the positives.”

Colton James, another returning veteran forward, sees the Bruins squad as one that is full of skill and determination.

“Everyone is coming together and starting to click,” James said. “The rookies are adapting well and with the help of all the veterans, are starting to feel very confident. We just want to play with more consistency this year.”

Also back are goaltender Hunter Myers and forwards Cristian Purdom and Ryker Kain, with the latter having played in the MWJHL during the inaugural 2012-13 campaign. Defenseman Zach Elkins is a youngster who will be one to watch.

The Bruins begin the regular season tonight at Fraser Hockeyland against the expansion MC Monarchs before hosting the Monarchs at home tomorrow for a 4:30 p.m. opening faceoff.
