Borough rivalries heat up

After the first weekend of interleague play, neither division walked away with a clear advantage. With more crossover games on the docket this week, however, teams from the Brooklyn/Queens and Bronx/Manhattan divisions will be looking to grab a foothold in the burgeoning borough rivalry.

This weekend features even more intriguing matchups, as some of the top teams from each conference are set to do battle on the diamond.

The Bronx Orioles (6-1) and the Baisley Pirates (6-3) will square off for a two-game set at Baisley Park on May 10, as the Pirates look to put their sweep at the hands of the BQE Nationals behind them. The Orioles, buoyed by a two-homer performance from second baseman Matt Ortiz last week, look to be one of the top new teams in the NYCMBL this year, but will face their stiffest test to date.

Elsewhere on the schedule, two teams coming off tough sweeps will look to get back to their winning ways, as the NY Beers travel to Queens to take on the defending champion NY Storm at Elmjack Field.

The doubleheader will pit the Beers’ crack staff against two of the Brooklyn/Queens division’s most feared hitters. Storm standout Bryan Howard got the bat going last week, going 3-for-4 with 2 doubles and 3 RBIs, but is looking forward to facing the Beers’ talented group of hurlers, including Ryan Smith, who is coming off a hard-luck 1-0 loss to the Rainmakers.

“I always get excited to see the best of the best,” Howard said. “I was actually thinking the other day how great it would be to see [John Lanahan] and I against them. This weekend, we’ll see what happens.”

NYCMBL’s Sunday night game at Taft will see the Titans (4-3) tangle with the BQE Nationals (5-1). The Nats took control of the Brooklyn/Queens conference last week with a sweep over Baisley, while the Titans got back on track with two wins over the Storm.

According to Titans’ slugger George Collazo, the familiarity between the two squads will make for some added drama when they take the field on Sunday.

“My guys always come to the field excited and ready to play,” the 2013 MVP said. “They will be extra pumped this weekend playing the Nationals, knowing what a good team they are.

“It also makes it more interesting that our guys and most of the Nationals are friends off the field,” he added. “Me personally, I’m playing for bragging rights being former teammates and winning a Fall Ball championship with most of those guys.”
