On Nov. 12, NYCMBL players and coaches were on hand to celebrate the best performances of the 2014 season at the annual “Metros” awards dinner held at the Public House in NYC.
Cross Bronx Rockies’ rookie Bryan White took home his first ever Metro on Wednesday night, parlaying a .516, 10 HR, 40 RBI season into a unanimous selection as the AA MVP in the Bronx/Manhattan AA division. Orioles’ workhorse Anthony Cabrera (9-2, 2.63 ERA) was rewarded for his efforts with the Bx/Manhattan Cy Young award, while his skipper, Glenn Mulero, was named the division’s manager of the year for leading his fledgling club to a 19-6 finish and an appearance in the division finals.
In the Brooklyn/Queens division, BQE Nationals' third baseman Roberto Martinez (.475, 18 RBIs, 12 doubles) led in MVP voting, while Mud Hens’ ace Chris Liegel (5-2, 0.99 ERA) took home his second-straight Cy Young trophy. Mud Hen manager Mike Smith was named Brooklyn/Queens manager of the year as the Hens secured the top playoff seed with a 16-7 regular season campaign.
In the Single A division, Astoria Mets' standout Jonathan Simkins was named MVP after his tremendous season at the plate (.542, 23 RBIs) and on the mound (6-2, 2.77 ERA). Too Hot’s Wellington Reyes (8-2, 1.61 ERA) won the Single A Cy Young award, and Will Melgar, who guided the Nassau Yankees to the championship, took home Single A manager of the year honors.
Two players were also cited for their playoff accomplishments, as the AA champion New York Beers’ ace Ryan Smith and the Nassau Yankees' Hiram Vidal were named the postseason MVPs in their respective divisions.
Veteran umpire Al Mayo was named the Metro League’s Umpire of the Year.
