BALTIMORE, MD - Ninth-ranked Johns Hopkins beat 10th-ranked Ohio State, 8-7, in both teams' regular season finale at Homewood Field Saturday. Senior Taylor D'Amore broke the program's all-time assist leader as the Blue Jays improve to 14-4 overall and with a 3-3 mark in the ALC, earn the fifth seed. The Buckeyes, who had already clinched the second seed, fall to 12-5 overall and 4-2 in the ALC. Ohio State took a 2-0 lead with goals from Cian Dabrowski and Cara Facchina in a span of less than three minutes. From right goal line extended, Jennifer Porretto fed a pass to Dabrowski cutting down the middle, and she scored on a low shot at the 18:14-mark to open the scoring. Just over two and a half minutes later, Ohio State had a two-goal lead when Facchina dodged from right goal line extended and snuck a shot just under the crossbar. Hopkins answered with six unanswered goals in a run that took a little less than 12 minutes. Sophomore Dene' DiMartino got Hopkins on the board when she dodged hard down the left alley, tiptoed along the crease and scored from in tight at 14:20. Less than three minutes later, D'Amore fed a pass from behind the cage to classmate Sammy Cermack, who scored on a quick-stick shot from the slot to tie the game. Hopkins then capitalized on a failed Ohio State clear, as D'Amore checked the ball from Christine Easton and sophomore Erica Matz grabbed the ground ball in the midfield and started a fast break with a pass to D'Amore. She ran towards the cage, drew a double team and then passed to DiMartino on the left post, who fired a side-arm shot past Tori DeScenza to put JHU up 3-2 with 9:27 to play. It was the 150th assist of D'Amore's career, breaking the Hopkins' all-time record of 149 set by Mary Key. Senior Sarah Taylor and junior Jen Cook followed with back-to-back free position goals just 75 seconds apart and Hopkins led 5-2 with 7:20 on the clock. In just a seven-minute span, Hopkins had turned a two-goal deficit into a three-goal lead. D'Amore capped the six-goal run with a fast-break goal at the 2:27 mark. Cook forced a Buckeye turnover on the clear in the midfield. On the restart, Cook found D'Amore behind the Ohio State defense with a long pass. D'Amore collected the ball and went in all alone on DeScenza to push the score to 6-2. Ohio State would get one back before the half to make it a three-goal game at the break. Dabrowski dumped a pass down low to Allie Ogilvie on the right post. She faked left and then slipped a shot inside the right post with 1:17 to play. The Buckeyes came out strong to start the second half, picking up where they left off and scoring the first three goals of the half, in less than two minutes, to tie the game. Porretto took an over-the-cage pass from Facchina and scored high-to-low from the right alley at 23:55. Just 17 seconds later, Dabrowski scored on a shot to the right post from the middle of the fan to pull the Buckeyes within one. Porretto followed with her second goal of the half to tie the game at the 22:01-mark. Jackie Cifarelli dumped a pass to Porretto, who was curling around the right side of the crease, and she beat freshman Caroline Federico stick-side to tie the game at six. Over the next few minutes, Federico intercepted a pair of passes to thwart the Buckeye offense. D'Amore then put Hopkins back on top and ended a scoreless drought that had lasted just over 23 minutes with her second goal of the afternoon. Cutting from behind the cage, she took a dump pass from Cermack, turned and blew a shot past DeScenza that gave the Blue Jays a 7-6 lead with 9:13 to play. The Buckeyes needed just 71 seconds to answer and tie the game, capitalizing on a man-up situation after Federico was given a yellow card. Dabrowski eventually earned a free position shot and converted it to tie the game. Sophomore Jenna Reifler would give Hopkins the lead for good with 3:52 left on her only shot of the game. D'Amore picked up third assist of the game when she slipped a pass to Reifler in the slot. With a defender on her, Reifler bounced a shot past DeScenza from the doorstep. DiMartino then won the ensuing draw and Hopkins was able to run out the remainder of the game. D'Amore led the Blue Jays with a game-high five points (2g, 3a) and became just the seventh player in NCAA Division I history to tally 150 career assists. DiMartino (2g), Cermack (1g, 1a) and Cook (1g, 1a) finished with two points apiece and DiMartino tied her career high with a game-high six draws. Federico made three saves in earning the win, while also causing a pair of turnovers and grabbing a career-high five ground balls. Dabrowski led the Buckeyes with four points (3g, 1a) while Porretto (2g, 1a) and Facchina (1g, 1a) also had multi-point games. DeScenza made 12 saves in the loss for the Buckeyes. Hopkins travels to Evanston, IL for the eighth ALC Tournament May 1, 2, 4 at Northwestern's Lakeside Field. Hopkins will take on fourth-seeded and eighth-ranked Penn State in the first quarterfinal game. Opening draw is slated for 2:00 pm CT
