Date: Aug 11, 2014
The American Lacrosse Conference has honored three players and their teams for their play last
week as the league announced its eleventh weekly player honors for 2014. Florida’s Sammi Burgess picked up
her second consecutive, and fourth overall, ALC Rookie of the Week honor after helping the Gators to a
league victory that clinched the ALC regular season title. Penn State’s Madison Cyr earned her first league
accolade of 2014 as she picked up Offensive Player of the Week honors, and Ohio State’s Tori DeScenza was
named the Defensive Player of the Week, her second such honor in 2014.
Cyr led the Nittany Lions with four goals in a come-from-behind victory against Johns Hopkins as she
tallied all four her goals in the second-half rally, including three in a 26-second span. Cyr added a game-high
five draw controls and recorded two ground balls. She has netted at least four goals in a game for fourth time
this season.
DeScenza, a junior goalie on Ohio State women’s lacrosse team, collected 11 saves, including seven
stops in the first half in the 12-9 win over No. 9 Notre Dame last week in Columbus. DeScenza improves to
a season-best 12 wins in 2014, holding the Irish to an 0-for-5 mark in free attempt shots, while collecting a
season-best .488 save percentage, facing 29 shots against Notre Dame.
Florida’s Burgess scored a career-high four goals to lead the No. 4 Gators as they outlasted No. 5
Northwestern, 13-12, and clinched the ALC regular season title on Saturday. The freshman attack added an
assist to score a game-high five points. Burgess also recorded a shooting percentage of 1.000 and picked up
two ground balls and a draw control.
