ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's lacrosse team notched its second straight win, 16-6, at Detroit, as eight different players scored en route to a season high in goals from the Wolverines on Wednesday (April 16) at Titan Field.
Freshman Kim Coughlan (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Saint Anthony's) paced Michigan with a career-best and game-high four goals, while freshman Jess Angerman (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) scored her third straight hat trick.
Detroit jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first nine minutes of play, before a free position goal from the top left hash by freshman Anna Schueler (Chicago, Ill./Loyola Academy). Freshman Tess Korten (Glen Head, N.Y./North Shore) quickly added Michigan's second free position goal of the afternoon 51 seconds later to tie the game at two. Coughlan capped a 3-0 Wolverine run that took place over a span of just 1:04 and gave U-M its first lead of the day, as she won the draw close to the near sideline and took the ball straight to goal.
The two teams traded goals over the next 12 minutes, and the Titans regained the lead, 5-4, with 7:13 to play in the first half. Michigan responded with five unanswered goals before the halftime buzzer. Korten and Coughlan each netted a pair of goals during that stretch, while freshman Kelly Schlansker (Glenville, N.Y./Niskayuna) tallied her second career goal. Coughlan's second and third goals of the day came in the final 47 seconds of the half, including one just before time expired. A Detroit foul gave Angerman possession of the ball on the right wing with three seconds left, and she fed Coughlan, who dodged underneath a Titan defender and snuck in Michigan's ninth goal of the half.
Out of the break, freshman Madeline Dion (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) scored at 27:01, as she drove left to right and fired a hard bounce shot, continuing Michigan's run that started at 6:32 of the first half. The Wolverines added five more consecutive goals throughout the next 11:24, including the first career goal from freshman Natalie Carti (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) at the 2:04 mark. Freshman Allie Breitfeller (East Northport, N.Y./Northport) added a goal and as assist in the last two minutes of the game, including a score with 2.8 ticks remaining on the clock to give U-M the 16-6 victory.
Freshman Allison Silber (Phoenix, Md./McDonogh School) made eight saves in her third career win in goal for Michigan. Freshman Sara Beach (Towson, Md./Towson) led the Wolverine defense with a career-high five ground balls and three caused turnovers as well as one draw control.
The Maize and Blue will now return to Ann Arbor for its final two games of the regular season, starting by hosting Vanderbilt in its final ALC matchup of 2014 on Saturday (April 19) at 1 p.m. inside Michigan Stadium
