The American Lacrosse Conference has honored three players and their teams for their play last week as the league announced its tenth weekly player honors for 2014. Florida’s Sammi Burgess picked up her third ALC Rookie of the Week honor after helping the Gators to a league victory over the week, while Johns Hopkins’ Caroline Federico was named the Defensive Player of the Week for the second time in 2014 with the Blue Jays’ win on the road against Northwestern. NU’s Kat DeRonda earned Offensive Player of the Week honors, her first league accolade this season, after leading the ‘Cats in scoring in two ALC games.

Burgess scored a career-high four goals and dished out an assist to finish the day with five points as Florida defeated Vanderbilt, 14-9. Burgess also grabbed three ground balls and a draw control as the Gators remained perfect in the ALC and claimed a share of the regular season title. The freshman attack ranks second for Florida with 40 points (27 g, 13 a), outscored only by Shannon Gilroy.

Federico made her first career start and stopped nine shots she face in back-stopping Johns Hopkins to a 12-11 double overtime win at #5 Northwestern on Sunday. She made five saves in the first half as the teams were tied 6-6 at the break. She also made a save in overtime that kept the game tied and forced a second, sudden-victory, overtime.

Senior attacker DeRonda remained red-hot offensively, setting single-game career highs for points in back-to-back outings last week. DeRonda began the week with four goals and five points, both career bests, in a 15-9 Northwestern victory over Vanderbilt. She then bested that performance with four goals and three assists for seven points in NU’s double overtime defeat vs. Johns Hopkins, the most points by a Wildcat in a game since March 16, 2013. After scoring 15 points through NU’s first nine games of 2014, DeRonda has now racked up 19 in her last four outings.
