Good Luck to our ALC schools
Date: Aug 11, 2014
The American Lacrosse Conference has honored three players and their teams for their play last
week as the league announced its ninth weekly player honors for 2014. Bridget Bianco earned her second
consecutive, and third this season, Defensive Player of the Week honor, while Florida’s Shannon Gilroy and
Caroline Fitzgerald picked up two awards for the Gators. Gilroy won her third Offensive Player of the Week
accolade this year and Fitzgerald was named the Rookie of the Week for the second time in 2014.
Junior GK and reigning ALC Defensive Player of the Week remained on a hot streak for the Wildcats
over the weekend. In wins over No. 10 Penn State and No. 12 Penn, Bianco recorded 16 total saves while
allowing just six combined goals, raising her season save percentage to .497. Bianco is the anchor of a
Northwestern defense that has limited five of its last six opponents to six goals or fewer.
Gilroy scored seven goals to lead the Gators’ second-half rally to outlast No. 13 Johns Hopkins and
remain undefeated in the ALC. All seven of Gilroy’s goals were scored in the second half, accounting for seven
of the eight Florida points in the second stanza. The junior also scored her 200th career point and became
UF’s sole leader on the career free-position goals leaderboard.
Fitzgerald helped lead the Florida defense and was instrumental in keeping No. 13 Johns Hopkins from
a rally of its own as the Gators defeated the Blue Jays, 10-9, on Saturday. Fitzgerald helped shut down one of
Hopkins’ top scoring threats while also notching two ground balls and two caused turnovers.
