PEI's Doug McKinney to join Island Storm for 3rd Season
Charlottetown - Sept 13/13
University of Prince Edward Island and Charlottetown Rural grad Doug McKinney has signed with the Island Storm for a third season.
The 6'9", 230 lbs Power Forward averaged 8.5 minutes per game for the Storm in the 2012-2013 season and was named to the NBL All-Canadian 2nd Team.
McKinney says, "I am excited to be part of a 3rd and successful season with the Storm. I'm looking forward to both working hard on the court to help the team win games, and off the court in the community. Fans will definitely like the hard work we bring, both on and off the court."
Storm Head Coach Joe Salerno says he looks at McKinney as a true veteran coming into his third season with the team.
"It's great to have Dougie back for his third season with us. He made big strides last year and has really grown into a veteran leadership role with our ball club. Coming off his first season, Doug realized what it was going to take (physically) to compete in the NBL and has done an incredible job getting his body in great playing shape and keeping it there. I think Doug saw his hard work pay off last season, and I am confident he will come into training camp with that same mindset this season. I know Doug is excited about having the opportunity to play professional basketball in the town he grew up in. It should be a great season for him."
In 30 games last year with the Storm, McKinney had a career-best 16 points with 5 rebounds in 27 minutes in a 133-122 win over the Halifax Rainmen on March 16, 2013. McKinney was a 5 year starter for the UPEI Panthers from 2002-2007. He averaged 15.8 points and 7.2 rebounds per game in his senior year, when he was named UPEI's Male Athlete of the Year.
