Halifax Rainmen re-sign local guard Tyler Richards
-For immediate release- September 20th, 2013
(Halifax, NS) The Halifax Rainmen are proud to announce that they have re-signed Canadian guard Tyler Richards, a local legend and Rainmen fan favourite who could be spotted this summer coaching youth camps and tirelessly working on his game in gyms all over Nova Scotia. Richards, a 6'2 shooting guard from Dartmouth NS, played in 31 games with the Rainmen last season averaging 3.9 points in just over 12 minutes per game. While Richards played sparingly off the Rainmen bench to begin his first season of professional basketball, as the season went on he earned the trust of Coach Rob Spon as a defensive stopper and three point shooter. Over the final 7 games of the Rainmen season, Richards averaged 8.6 points, including 39% shooting from 3, along with 3.6 assists and 2.9 rebounds per game, including his first career double-double, a 21 point, 10 assist outburst against the Montreal Jazz on February 23rd, during which he set season highs for points and assists in a game, and the Rainmen season high with 7/11 shooting from 3. Richards is also a capable ball handler and was 10th in the NBLC in Assist/Turnover Ratio last season with 2.4 assists per turnover. Richards was a standout scorer at St. FX, a 4 time AUS All-Star and finished his career 3rd all-time in St. FX scoring with 2575 points. He averaged 19.6 points per game in 2008-09, second in the AUS behind former Rainmen star Joey Haywood. Richards was also a local legend at St. Patrick's High School in Halifax, where he led his team to three consecutive NS provincial titles.
The signing of Richards brings the Rainmen to 3 Canadian players signed, all of whom had successful careers in the CIS, as the former X-Men Richards joins Dalhousie's Robert Nortmann and Brandon's Michael Smith as Canadians on the Rainmen roster.
