U14 Girls Take Home Silver
Date: Apr 16, 2014
This past Sunday the U10 Lady Titans traveled to the Bridgewater Sports Arena to participate in the Rocket Rapid Fire tournament/U10 MAWHA championship. After going undefeated and finishing in first place for the regular season the girls were hoping to have the same success in the post season. The tournament format consisted of round robin play, a semifinal, a final to crown the MAWHA U10 champion and a final game to determine the tournament winner between the 2 brackets, MAWHA league and independent teams. The girls opened up round robin pool play against the only team that had tied them during the regular season. The girls started out slow and if not for the play of goal tender Karina Vang and a disallowed goal due to the net being off the girls would have found themselves down by a few goals. The Titans were able to get on the board first after Molly Patten was able to draw a checking penalty. The tournament format awarded a penalty shot for each penalty and Rachel Pollo was able to beat the goalie with a wrist shot to give the Titans a 1-0 lead. After that goal the girls settled down and played a much better game and were able to take a 2-0 lead after Biz Clements scored on a wrist shot to the short side. Karina Vang made a few more saves to preserve the shut out with the final score Lady Titans 2 Lady Islanders 0.
With little time between games the Lady Titans face the Lady Hawks from Central Park in their 2nd game of the morning. The girls had a much stronger start to the 2nd game and were able to get on the board first after a goal by Caroline Bergin after she was able to put her 2nd rebound shot past the Lady Hawk goal tender who had made 2 strong saves on her prior attempts. The Lady Titans would add to the lead when Biz Clements scored on a rebound after a well executed 2 on 1 with Noelle Turek. The 2nd half started pretty much the same way as the first half went when Biz Clements made it 3-0 after she received a pass from Aeryn Freeman in the slot and walked around 3 Lady Hawk defenders and shot near side for her 2nd goal of the game. Later in the 2nd half Molly Riggi was awarded a penalty shot but she was unsuccessful in her attempt. Even though the Lady Titans were up 3-0 they kept on coming and were rewarded for their hard work when Biz Clements scored her 3rd goal of the game on a wrap around goal of a rebound from a Noelle Turek shot. Later in the period Noelle Turek would have a chance to add a goal to her 2 assists but her penalty shot attempt was wide to the goalies stick side. While the Lady Titans went 0 for 2 on their penalty shots the Lady Hawks were able to score on their only penalty shot of the game when the Lady Hawk player made a great move to beat Karina Vang. Final score Lady Titans 4 Lady Hawks 1.
The Lady Titans would face the Quarry Cats in their last game of pool play and a win or a tie would give them the first seed for the semifinals. The Lady Titans struck first in the game when once again the girls executed a 2 on 1 perfectly when Rachel Pollo scored of an Ani Kozak rebound. The Lady Titans would make it 2 - 0 when Amanda Haviland scored on a wrap around goal after Biz Clements had shot wide. On a play that was almost a carbon copy of their first goal of the game Noelle Turek was able to score on another 2 on 1 goal when she scored of a Biz Clements rebound to make the score 3 - 0. In one of the nicest plays of the tournament Amanda Haviland scored here 2nd goal of the game when working a great give and go combination with the Clements girls, Anna and Biz. With score 4-0 the defense wanted to get in on the scoring and Molly Riggi was able to make it 5 - 0 on a wrist shot after an end to end rush Karina Vang did not see many shots in the game but with 1:30 left in the game she was able to stop a flurry of 4 shots to preserve the shut out. With the win the girls clinched the #1 seed after pool play and would face the Quarry Cats in a rematch in the semifinals.
The semifinal vs the Quarry Cats went pretty much the same way as the preliminary game as the Lady Titans won 4 -1 with goals score by Rachel Pollo, Biz Clements and 2 goals by Molly Riggi, After that victory the Lady Titans would face the Lady Islanders for the inaugural U10 MAWHA championship. The Lady Titans had a much better start to the game than the pool play game vs the Lady Islanders and were able to build a 2 -0 lead on goals by Rachel Pollo and Emma Conroy. With the Titans leading 2 -0 with a little less than 5 minutes left in the championship game the lights went out at Bridgewater. After a few screams and a lot of laughs the lights were restored and the game was back on after a 10 minute delay. The Islanders were able to use the delay to slow down the Lady Titans momentum and were able to score a goal over Karina Vang's blocker to make the score 2 - 1. The Lady Titans quickly regained their composure and shortly after Rachel Pollo scored her 2nd of the game to give the Lady Titans a 3 -1 victory and the U10 MAWHA championship banner.
After the banner presentation the Lady Titans would watch the next game closely to see who they would face in the tournament final from the independent bracket. The independent final was decided in over time when the Shore Line Sharks from Connecticut beat Darien Connecticut 2 -1. It would have been interesting if Darien had won the game because it would have been a rematch of the prior year's final at the U8 division between the Lady Titans and Darien in which the Lady Titans won 7 - 0. In the final game of the tournament the Lady Titans saved their best for last and were able to completely control the game. The Titans were able to get on the board first after Rachel Pollo scored on a beautiful backhand deke on her 2nd penalty shot of the period. Later in the 2nd half Amanda Haviland scored another great goal when she beat a Shark defenseman on a 1 on 1 and scored on a backhand to forehand goal. Karina Vang would post her 3rd shutout in 6 games and the girls would take home the Rocket Tournament Championship trophy as well as the MAWHA U10 Championship banner. A great ending to a great season.
